There are now more ways to make learning German grammar more fun, and that is through free online games. This is a guide to some of the best German grammar games on the Internet.

German Past Participles Battleship
Rating Good

German Past Participles Battleship is a free online game and playing it does not require any downloads or website registrations. The game shows a sentence in English, then requires the player to select the proper choice in German to advance the battleship. Failure to answer enough questions correctly sinks the battleship and ends the game.

All the questions incorporate German past participles such as. "Die Hütte lag geschützt im Tal." The cabin lay protected in the valley.

However, a distinct disadvantage of this German grammar game which prevents a five-star rating is that it does not reveal the answers to missed questions.

The Forms of "Hatten"
Rating Excellent

Practicing the forms of "hatten" is a more comprehensive German grammar game that runs using a Java plug-in, and does not require any registrations or fees to play. "Hatten" is the imperfect form of the German verb "haben," which means to have. "The Forms of Hatten" has flash cards to help students and other German enthusiasts thoroughly review the material, and the game itself runs smoothly without any apparent technical bugs.

Haben Concentration
Rating Excellent

Haben Concentration has a simple object - uncover the matching pairs of cards in a Java plug-in grid format. A list of terms used in the game, which is derived from this German verb meaning "to have," as well as flash cards are available to help make concentrating on Haben Concentration a lot less challenging. At any time, the player can also choose to reveal the answers and then start over.

Some of the words used in Haben Concentration include "Wir haben" which means "we have" and "Wir haben sport" or "We have P.E."

Haben Concentration is also an excellent German grammar game to help improve general language vocabulary, as it uses additional words outside of the verb "haben" such as Mathe (math) and Englisch (English.)

German Grammar Games through Quizzes
Rating Excellent

Quizzes can create test anxiety in even the most seasoned student, but some of the best "risk-free" ways out there to learn German grammar include online interactive quizzes. Here's two of the best:

  • The Nominative Case: this is a 40-question quiz that drills on German grammar without being dull. While it does not offer review materials, it is ideal for advanced students who are ready to practice everything from definite and indefinite articles to pronouns. It does give the correct answer if a question is answered incorrectly, and there's no "real" grade to accuse here like one might receive in a German class in a school or college.
  • The Accusative Case: The Direct Object: this is a 20-question quiz that acts as one of the German grammar games to help students of the language learn the direct objects. This game does offer the correct answers for missed questions, but does include a few trick questions in which there really is NO correct answer.
