Chinese Grammar: The Difference of Verb and Verb + ‘qilái’

Verb + 起来【qǐlái】 can means ‘up’ or quite close means “begin” such as 站起来【zhàn qǐlái=stand up】, 坐起来【zuò qǐlai=sit up】, 拿起来【ná qǐlái=pick up】, 笑起来【xiào qǐlái=begin to laugh】, etc.

Verb + 起来【qǐlái】can also be used when talking about your feeling about something that you look at, listen to, feel, etc, such as 看起来【kàn qǐlai=looks, looks like】， 听起来【tīng qǐlai=sounds, sounds like】， 闻起来【wén qǐlái=smell】, 吃起来【chī qǐlái=taste】, 坐起来【zuò qǐlai=sit on】 etc.

a. Here 起来【qǐlái】means ‘up’ or quite close means “begin” such as 站起来【zhàn qǐlái=stand up】, 坐起来【zuò qǐlai=sit up】, 笑起来【xiào qǐlái=begin to laugh】, etc.

Example 1:

We stand up together.

我们【wǒmén=we】 一起【yīqǐ=together】 站起来【zhàn qǐlái=stand up】。

我们 一起 站 起来。

Example 2:

Each time she speaks, we laugh.

Literally means, “Each time she speaks, as soon as we begin to laugh”.

她【tā=she】 一【yī=each time, every time】 说【shuō=speak】，我们【wǒmén=we】 就【jiù=as soon as】 笑起来【xiào qǐlái=begin to laugh】 了【le】。

她 一 说，我们 就 笑 起来 了。

b.Verb + 起来【qǐlái】can also be used when talking about your feeling about something that you look at, listen to, feel, etc, such as 看起来【kàn qǐlai=looks, looks like】， 听起来【tīng qǐlai=sounds, sounds like】， 闻起来【wén qǐlái=smell】, 吃起来【chī qǐlái=taste】, 坐起来【zuò qǐlai=sit on】 etc.

Example:

This perfume smells pretty good.

这【zhè=this】 瓶【píng =a measure word for perfumes】 香水【xiāngshuǐ=perfume】 闻起来【wén qǐlái=smell】 不错【bùcuò=pretty good】。

这 瓶 香水 闻 起来 不错。

Example 1a:

During working time, he always looks at her.

上班的时候【shàngbān de shíhòu=during working time】，他【tā=he】总是【zǒngshì=always】 看【kàn=look at】 她【tā=she】。

上班 的 时候，他 总是 看 她。

Compare that with example 1b:

He looks very fierce.

他【tā=he】看起来【kànqǐlái=looks like, looks as if】很【hěn=very】凶【xiōng= fierce】。

他 看起来 很 凶。

Example 2a:

Older brother likes listening music.

哥哥【gēgē=older brother】 喜欢【xǐhuān=like, love】 听【tīng=listen】 音乐【yīnyuè=music】。

哥哥 喜欢 听 音乐。

Compared that with example 2b:

It sounds so difficult.

听起来【tīngqǐlái=sounds】 这么【zhème=so】 难【nán=difficult】。

听 起来 这么 难。

Example 3:

Don’t sit on the ground.

别【bié=don’t】 坐【zuò=sit】 在【zài=on, at】 地上【dìshàng=ground】。

别 坐 在 地上。

Compare that with example 3b:

He sat up suddenly (from lying position).

他【tā=he】 突然【tūrán=suddenly】 坐起来【zuò qǐlai=sit up】 了【le】。

他 突然 坐 起来 了。

Compare that with example 3c:

That sofa is very comfortable to sit on.

那【nà=that】 张【zhāng=a measure word for sofas】 沙发【shāfā=sofa】 坐起来【zuò qǐlai=sit on】 很【hěn=very】 舒服【shūfu=comfortable】。

Here 坐起来【zuò qǐlai=sit on】is related with someone’s feeling when s/he sits on the sofa.

那 张 沙发 坐 起来 很 舒服。

Example 4a:

Older sister doesn’t like eating ice cream.

姐姐【jiějie=older sister】不【bù=not】喜欢【xǐhuān=like】吃【chī=eat】冰淇淋【bīngqílín=ice cream】。

姐姐 不 喜欢 吃 冰淇淋。

Compare that with example 4b:

Some beef steaks taste very soft.

有些【yǒuxiē=some】 牛排【niúpái=beef steak】 吃起来【chī qǐlái=taste】 很【hěn=very】 软【ruǎn=soft】。

有些 牛排 吃起来 很 软。
