Words are used to express one’s feelings and thoughts. With a change of circumstances, our moods change and so does the choice of words that we use to express ourselves. Interjections are independent words that add expression to what is being conveyed and are known as Ghotak shabd in Hindi.

Learning Hindi Grammar-Interjections

Interjections are words added to a sentence to convey different moods and feelings. Interjections are known as Ghotak or Vismyadibodhak Shabd in Hindi language. As in the case of English, these are exclamatory words that help to add expression to what is being said. In both the languages, interjections are followed by exclamatory marks.

There are individual words for various emotions. At times an interjection is used as a complete sentence, In this article, we learn the meanings and the usage of some Hindi interjections. The most commonly used interjections in Hindi along with their usage are given below. The italicized sentences are translations of the Hindi sentences.

To express happiness (harsh): Ahaa!, Aahaa!, Vah!, Vah-Vah!, Shabsh!, Kya Khoob!

  • Aaha!, Aaj to khub acha khana milega ((आहा!,आज तो खुब अच्छा खाना मिलेगा ।) Aaha!, today we will get tasty food.
  • Vah!, yeh to bahut sunder lag raha hai (वाह!, यह तो बहुत सुन्दर लग रहा है ।) Wow!, this is looking very pretty.
  • Shabash! Tum ne khana acha banaya hai (शाबाश!, तुम्ने अच्छा खाना बनाया है ।) Congratulations!, you have made tasty food.
  • Kya Khub! Yeh achi kahi tumne (क्या खुब!, यह अच्छी कही तुम्ने ।) Well said!

To express sadness (shok): Hai!, Haay!, Aah!, Oh!, Uff!, Afsos!, Hey Ram!, Hey Ishwar!

  • Hey Ishwar!, yeh kya ho gaya. (हे इश्वर!, ये क्या हो गया ।) Oh God!, What has happened.
  • Hai!, mere paise chori ho gaye (हाय!, मेरे पैसे चोरी हो गये ।) What!, My money has been stolen.
  • Aah!, bahut dard ho raha hai (आह!, बहुत दर्द हो रहा है ।) Oh!, it's hurting.
  • Afsos! Tumhare sath aisa hua (अफ्सोस!, गलत जवाब ।) Sorry!, this happened with you

To express surprise (vismay): Hain!, Arre!, Kya!, Baap Re!, Sach!, Oh!

  • Arre! Tum yahan kaise? (अरे!, तुम यहा़ं कैसे?) How came you here!
  • Kya! Tum ne shaadi kar li (क्या!, तुम ने शादी कर ली ।) What! You have got married.

To express anger (krodh): Hut!, Chal!, Dur Ho!, Abe!, Kyon!

  • Dur Ho!, Mat chedo ise (दुर हो!, मत छुओ इसे ।) Move away!, do not touch it.
  • Kyon! Paise du tumhe.(क्यों!, पैसे दु तुम्हे।) Why! Should I give the money to you.

To express insult (tirskaar): Chhih!, Thu thu!, Dhat!, Dhikkaar!

  • Dhikaar hai!, Ase kaam karte ho. (धिक्कार है!, ऐसे काम करते हो ।) Shame on you for doing such actions
  • Chhih! Chori karte ho ( छीः!,चोरी करते हो ।) Shame on you, you steal.

To express consent (sweekriti): Achcha!, Theek!, Bahut Achchha!

  • Achcha! Hum jaa rahe hai (अच्छा!, हम जा रहे है ।) O.K, we are leaving.
  • Theek! Jaise tum ne kaha, vaisa hi karenge. ( ठीक!, जैसा तुम ने कहा, वैसा ही करेंगे ।) All right!, we shall do as you say.

To express praise (prashansa): Vaah!, Khoob!, Bahut Achchhe!

  • Bahut aacha! Tumhe to saab pehle se hi aata hai.( बहुत अच्छा तुम्हे तो सब पहले से ही आता है ।) Very Good! You know everything before hand.

Language without interjections would be devoid of all expressions. They help to increase the impact of what is being said and without them language would be very dull and flat. We would not be able to differentiate between emotions that accompany a statement.
