Learn Mandarin: How To Create Chinese Punctuation Marks Using MS Word

A similar method to that used to type European Punctuation Marks; simply change your keyboard language into Chinese and then type the punctuation mark as you would normally.

This method is used for typing:

， 逗号 【dòuhào=comma】

； 分号 【fēnhào=semicolon】

！ 感叹号 【gǎntànhào=exclamation mark】 or 叹号 【tànhào】

？ 问号 【wènhào= question mark】

。 句号 【jùhào=full stop, period】

1. Assuming you already have the Chinese language files installed in your Windows XP and your keyboard setting is English (US).

2. Change your keyboard language into Chinese, as follows:

· Press Shift+Alt button.

· If the language bar shows 英【yīng=English Input】, press Shift button to change it into 中【zhōng=Chinese Input】.

3. Type the English punctuation mark, and then the Chinese punctuation mark will show automatically.

· 逗号 【dòuhào=comma】 : type , and the result is ，

· 分号 【fēnhào=semicolon】 : type ; and the result is ；

· 感叹号 【gǎntànhào=exclamation mark】 or 叹号 【tànhào】 : type ! and the result is ！

· 问号 【wènhào= question mark】: type ? and the result is ？

· 句号 【jùhào=full stop, period】: type . and the result is 。

The same method that is used to type Chinese characters using MS Word, can be used to type specialized Chinese punctuation which differs from the symbols we use in English writing. Simply change your keyboard language into Chinese then press the punctuation mark button, change the punctuation options if necessary and press spacebar.

This method is used for typing:

： 冒号 【màohào=colon】

、 顿号 【dùnhào=enumeration comma, pause mark】

• 间隔号 【jiàngéhào= Middle Dot】

《》 双书名号 【shuāngshūmínghào=double book title marks, double title marks】

〈〉 单书名号 【dānshūmínghào= single book title marks, single title marks】

a. Typing 冒号 【màohào=colon】: ：

1. Change your keyboard language to Chinese as above.

2. Press : and it shows ：

3. Press spacebar

b. Typing 顿号 【dùnhào=enumeration comma, pause mark】: 、

1. Change your keyboard language to Chinese as above.

2. Press \ (backslash) and it shows 、

3. Press spacebar

c. Typing 间隔号【jiàngéhào= Middle Dot】: ·

1. Change your keyboard language to Chinese as above.

2. Press Shift+2 button, it shows ·

3. Press spacebar

d. Typing 双书名号 【shuāngshūmínghào= double book title marks, double title marks】: 《》

1. Change your keyboard language into Chinese as above.

2. Press Shift+< button, it shows 《

3. Press Shift+> button, it shows 》

4. Press spacebar and the result is 《》

e. Typing 单书名号【dānshūmínghào= single book title marks, single title marks】: 〈〉

 1. Change your keyboard language into Chinese as above.

2．Press Shift+< button, it shows 《

3．Press ← (left arrow) button, it shows the punctuation mark options (see red rectangle in the screenshot).

4．Press ↓ (down arrow) button once and it shows (see blue rectangle in the screenshot)

5. Press spacebar

6. Press Shift+> button, it shows 〉

7. Press spacebar and the result is 〈〉

This uses the Insert Symbol menu to shows the Chinese Punctuation Marks. Here the Mandarin punctuation symbol shows directly without changing the keyboard language into Chinese.

Typing 代字号【dàizìhào=wavy dash】 : ～

1. Click Insert menu, select Symbols

2. Font: select (Asian text) – see pink rectangle in the screenshot.

3. Subset: select Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms – see red rectangle in the screenshot.

4. Character code: type FF5E – see brown rectangle in the screenshot.

5. From: select Unicode (hex) – green rectangle in the screenshot.

6. Click Insert button – purple rectangle in the screenshot. The result is ～

If you often use this 代字号【dàizìhào=wavy dash】 symbol, you can use Autocorrect Tools for quick typing, as follows:

 1. Click Tools menu, select Options, click Spelling & Grammar tab.

· Unchecked Check Spelling as you type (see red rectangle in the screenshot)

· Unchecked Check Grammar as you type (see pink rectangle in the screenshot)

· Unchecked Check Grammar with spelling (see green rectangle in the screenshot)

· Click OK

2. Highlight the 代字号【dàizìhào=wavy dash】 symbol : ～

3. Click Tools menu, select Autocorrect Options

• In Replace box: for example, type wv (see red rectangle in the screenshot. Here you can use other abbreviations instead of ‘wv’).
• Press Enter
• Click OK

4. From now on every time you want to type this symbol, just type wv on your document then press spacebar.

This uses the underline style to show the Chinese Punctuation mark. Here the Chinese symbol will shows directly without changing the keyboard language into Chinese.

Typing 专名号 【zhuānmínghào=proper noun mark】:

a. Basic Underline Style

唐朝 【Táng cháo=dynasty Tang】 建立【jiànlì=established】 于【yú=in】618 年 【nián=year】。

· Select whether the text is underlined, for example, 唐朝 then press Ctrl+U

· The result is 唐朝

b. Wavy Underline Style

This symbol will not appear correctly without the correct language packs installed.

• Select whether the text is underlined, for example, 唐朝
• Click Format menu, select Font
• Select underline style options, choose the wavy underline (see red rectangle in the screenshot)
• Click OK

This uses the drawing toolbar to show the Chinese Punctuation mark. Here the Chinese symbol will show directly without changing the keyboard language into Chinese.

Typing 专名号 【zhuānmínghào=proper noun mark】:

• Type the Chinese sentence in vertical writing.

• Then in drawing toolbar, click Line icon
• Draw a line on the left or right side of the Chinese characters.
