Visitors to Barcelona are sometimes surprised to learn that Spanish, Castilian Spanish, is not the only language spoken in Spain. This article provides an introduction to Catalan, a language which has been spoken in Catalonia since the 9th century.

Where is Catalan Spoken?

Catalan is spoken primarily in the Catalonian region of Spain as well as in the nearby Département de Pyrénées Orientales in France. Catalan is the language spoken in Barcelona, although most people also speak Castilian Spanish. French, Spanish, and Castilian are similar to each other because they are all Romance languages derived from Latin. Despite the strong similarities, Catalan is not a dialect of Spanish. However, Spanish and French speakers will recognize many words and phrases. Take a little time to study these useful Catalan phrases. They will come in handy while traveling in Catalunya (the Catalan word for the Catalonian region in Spain).
