幽默 【yōumò=humor, humorous】 is translated from English word 'humor' with a positive meaning.

a. 幽默 【yōumò=humorous】 is usually used for personality of someone.

Example:

I think that he is not only humorous but also has the responsibility.

我 【wǒ=I】 觉得 【juéde=think】 他 【tā=he】 不但 【bùdàn=not only】 幽默 【yōumò= humorous】，还 【hái=also】 很 【hěn=very】 有 【yǒu=have】 责任心 【zérènxīn=responsibility】。

我 觉得 他 不但 幽默， 还 很 有 责任心。

b. 幽默 【yōumò=humorous】 can also be used as the style of humor in speaking, writing, advertising, etc.

Example:

How you should solve it using the style of humor?

你 【nǐ=you】 应该 【yīnggāi=should】 怎样 【zěnyàng=how】 用 【yòng=use】 幽默 【yōumò=humor】 的 【de】 方式 【fāngshì=style】 解决【jiějué=solve】 呢 【ne】？

可笑 【kěxiào= laughable (mocking/ mockery)】 is usually used in negative meaning.

Example:

Older sister is older now but still acts like a spoiled child, it’s really laughable!

姐姐 【jiějie=older sister】 这么 【zhème=so, such】 大 【dà= old】 了 【le】 还 【hái=still】 撒娇 【sājiāo= act like a spoiled child】，真【zhēn=really】 可笑 【kěxiào=laughable】！

姐姐 这么 大 了 还 撒娇，真 可笑！

好笑 【hǎoxiào=laughable, funny】 is more often used in Taiwan.

a. When 好笑 【hǎoxiào】 means "laughable," it can be interchangeable with 可笑 【kěxiào= laughable】

Example:

Older sister is older now but still acts like a spoiled child, it’s really laughable!

姐姐 【jiějie=older sister】 这么 【zhème=so, such】 大 【dà= old】 了【le】 还 【hái=still】 撒娇 【sājiāo= act like a spoiled child】，真【zhēn=really】 好笑 【hǎoxiào=laughable】！

姐姐 这么 大 了 还 撒娇，真 好笑！

b. 好笑 【hǎoxiào=funny】 can also be used to express the quality of joke.

Example 1:

I tell you a very funny joke.

我 【wǒ=I】 说 【shuō=say, speak】 个 【gè=a measure word for things】 挺 【tǐng=very, quite】 好笑 【hǎoxiào=funny】的【de】 笑话 【xiàohuà=joke】 给 【gěi=to, for, give】 你 【nǐ=you】 听 【tīng=listen】。

我 说 个 挺 好笑 的 笑话 给 你 听。

Example 2:

Your joke is really cold. It’s not funny at all.

你的 【nǐde=your】 笑话 【xiàohuà=joke】 真 【zhēn=really】 冷 【lěng=cold】，一点 【yīdiǎn= a little, any】 也 【yě=used to emphasize the sentence】 不 【bù=not】 好笑 【hǎoxiào=funny】。

你的 笑话 真 冷，一点 也 不 好笑。

开玩笑 【kāiwánxiào= joke, make fun of】 has a positive or negative meaning depends on the context of the sentence. 开玩笑 【kāiwánxiào】 has a negative meaning when someone makes fun of someone or a serious matter.

Example 1:

I am better looking in person than my photo. Just kidding.

Literary means, “Compared with the photo, I am better looking. Just kidding.”

我 【wǒ=I】 本人 【běnrén=myself】 比 【bǐ=compare】 照片 【zhàopiàn= photo】 更 【gèng=more】 漂亮 【piàoliàng=good looking】。开玩笑 【kāiwánxiào=only joking, just kidding】。

我 本人 比 照片 更 漂亮。开玩笑。

Example 2:

Students, don’t joke in class!

同学们 【tóngxuémen=students】，上课 【shàngkè=attend class】 的 【de】 时候 【shíhòu=moment】 不要 【bùyào=don’t 】 开玩笑【kāiwánxiào=joke】！

同学们，上课 的 时候 不要 开玩笑！

Example 3:

Don’t make fun of him again!

别 【bié=don’t】 拿 【ná=put someone in a difficult position】 他 【tā=he】 开玩笑 【kāiwánxiào=make fun of】 了 【le】！

别 拿 他 开玩笑 了！

1. Compare these two sentences. What do you think about them?

Grandfather is a humorous person.

a. 爷爷 【yéye=grandfather】 是 【shì=is】 很 【hěn=very】 幽默 【yōumò】 的 【de】 人 【rén=person】。

b. 爷爷 【yéye=grandfather】 是 【shì=is】 很 【hěn=very】 可笑 【kěxiào】 的 【de】 人 【rén=person】。

Answer:

The first sentence is right and the second is wrong. 可笑 【kěxiào】, 好笑 【hǎoxiào】and 开玩笑 【kāiwánxiào】can't be used for personality of someone.

2. Compare these two sentences. What do you think about them?

I think what older brother said was very laughable.

a. 我 【wǒ=I】 觉得 【juéde=think】 哥哥 【gēgē=older brother】 说 【shuō=speak】 得 【de】 话 【huà=word】 很 【hěn=very】 可笑 【kěxiào】。

b. 我 【wǒ】 觉得 【juéde】 哥哥 【gēgē】 说 【shuō】 得 【de】 话 【huà】 很 【hěn】 好笑 【hǎoxiào】。

Answer:

Both of them are right. Here 好笑 【hǎoxiào= laughable】and 可笑 【kěxiào= laughable】are interchangeable.

3. Compare these two sentences. What do you think about them?

I think what older brother said was very funny.

a. 我 【wǒ=I】 觉得 【juéde=think】 哥哥 【gēgē=older brother】 说 【shuō=speak】 得 【de】 话 【huà=word】 很 【hěn=very】 可笑 【kěxiào】。

b. 我 【wǒ=I】 觉得 【juéde=think】 哥哥 【gēgē=older brother】 说 【shuō=speak】 得【de】 话 【huà=word】 很 【hěn=very】 好笑 【hǎoxiào】。

Answer:

Here the first is wrong and the second is right. 可笑【kěxiào】can't be used to express the quality of joke.

4. Compare these two sentences. What do you think about them?

Don’t make fun again.

1. 别 【bié】 开玩笑 【kāiwánxiào】 了 【le】。

2. 别 【bié】 好笑 【hǎoxiào】 了 【le】。

Answer:

The first sentence is right and the second is wrong. 好笑 【hǎoxiào】 can't be translated as "make fun."
