Spelling software for kids needs to be fun, easy and motivating. Word Web is a great little program that promotes independent skills in learning and understanding words, parts of speech and definitions for students at a range of age levels.

Where to get Word Web

Word Web is a product from Word Web Software, a UK company. It was originally developed as an add on function to a crossword program. Now it is used as a separate program to support spelling and word knowledge, with both dictionary and thesaurus functions. The freeware version is available from

There is also a commercial version which can be purchased which has more functions available.

Using Word Web

Word Web operates as a small icon at the bottom of your screen and can be used easily with a variety of text and word processing programs such as Microsoft Word. To check a word, highlight it on your screen the click on the Word Web icon. The window will open to show the various definitions, as well as how the word functions as different parts of speech (nouns, verbs etc). It can provide a list of 'nearest word' (words closest in spelling to that chosen), synonyms and antonyms and a link directly to the relevant Wiktionary and Wikipedia pages.

Word Web is handy because it allows users to access the information which is relevant to them in a timely manner. Looking up a word is fast and simple, and so the flow of writing can continue uninterrupted. Being able to link to Wikipedia pages in particular also encourages students to learn about and experiment with words and expressions as they are working, rather than reverting to the same old words they always use. It is also handy because it is so subtle, which is great for kids who struggle with their spelling and reading skills and need to constantly check and correct their work.

Spelling software for kids needs to be easy for them to operate on their own. As a tool for checking spelling, the function where a 'nearest word' list is generated means students can self correct their work and are more likely to find the word they are searching for.

The Down Side

As a freeware program there are limitations, and licensing agreements as part of the download. Only the latest version (Version 5) will operate with Windows Vista - earlier versions will not. The Proware version contains 6000 more definitions as well as the ability to customize the online referencing and glossaries to suit individual needs when compared with the freeware version. Another option is to use the site directly online without downloading the program.

For some students, Word Web may prove more of a distraction than a support. Teachers need to monitor their use of the program, and ensure they use it appropriately. It would be wise to also teach standard dictionary and thesaurus skills in addition to using Word Web, as students benefit from having both sets of skills at their disposal. It is not faster to use if you have to turn on the computer to look up a word first!

But in general as a spelling software for kids that they are motivated to use, Word Web is likely to be a winner in most situations.
