Students learn in a variety of different ways: some by reading, some by writing, some by seeing and doing. With Microsoft Publisher, students can create a poster to enhance any school project or presentation and help them with creativity and learning.

There are a variety of Microsoft Publisher projects for school. One that can be used in combination with any class presentation is a poster. By creating a poster in Microsoft Publisher, students can add an extra element to their presentations enhancing the learning experience for all of the students. A large number of students learn best visually. Students who learn better by use of visuals will be able to use a poster project to learn the concepts they may not learn from simply writing a report or reading in front of the class.

How to Create a Poster in Microsoft Publisher

Open the Microsoft Publisher program. Create a New Blank Print Publication and click “Blank Page Sizes” to pick the size of your poster. A standard sheet of paper (8.5” x 11”) is big enough for most projects, plus it can be printed from a standard printer with no hassle. If you choose a bigger sheet, make sure to change your printer setting to print the correct size when you complete your project.

Find any photos that pertain to your report and save them in a folder on your desktop. In Publisher, click “Insert–New Image–From File” to find your photos. After inserting each photo, drag the edges to change the size and lay them out in a creative design on the page. Avoid lining photos up in a straight line as it will not be visually stimulating for the viewers.

Next, use the “Insert–Text Box” command. Again, drag the edges to make the box as big needed. If you want to color the whole background, extend the edges to fit the entire page, then right-click to fill with a color. You can choose one or multiple colors and a design of your choice. Once your text box has been colored, the pictures might be covered. To uncover them, simply right-click and “Send to Back” so the color is now the background.

Follow the same step to insert text boxes for text. Text editing is the same as standard Word documents with choosing your fonts, sizes and colors from the main menu. Remember when you add text to keep it short and simple. One effective way is using bullet points based on the main topics you plan to cover in your presentation. This way you have an outline and it gives the other students a visual to follow along as well.

Grading the Project

The best way to grade a presentation where a student has used a poster is to give extra credit points for an effort made above and beyond the requirements of the assignment. Extra credit will also encourage the students to take that extra step – creating a poster – for better understanding and creativity in their work.
