Have students sit together in pairs for this project. It will be easier to manage since the children share the materials (food and supplies). Push two desks together unless you have access to long tables, such as the ones found in a cafeteria, for the students to do the craft upon.
You will need the following items to complete this craft:
- 2 bags of coconut flakes
- 2 bags of large marshmallows
- A paper plate for each student
- 1 tub of vanilla frosting for each pair of students
- 2 bags of chocolate chips
- Orange fruit roll ups
- Strawberry or cherry fruit roll ups
- Thin licorice strings
- Food scissors
- Blue paint
- Paint brush for each student
- Newspaper
Follow the directions below to create a winter scene from food:
- Lay newspaper across the student's desks for easy clean up.
- Paint the background of the paper plate blue. Leave a space at the bottom white, which is the snow.
- While the paint is wet, sprinkle on the coconut flakes. They will stick to the paint when the paint dries. The coconut flakes will make it look like it is snowing in the picture.
- Begin to make the snowman. Take three large marshmallows and cut them down the middle with a pair of food scissors. You now have six pieces. Give one half to one student (three pieces) and the other half to the other student (three pieces). If you use the whole marshmallow on the paper, then the snowman looks too big.
- Using the vanilla frosting, "paste" the three pieces of the snowman onto the paper plate. Place the cut side down so that the front looks smooth.
- Use the frosting to "paste" throughout this craft. Next, paste the chocolate chips where the eyes belong. Create the mouth with four or five chocolate chips. Make sure that they curve upward so that the snowman appears to be smiling.
- "Paste" three more chocolate chips, this time down the middle marshmallow for the buttons.
- Cut a small orange triangle from the orange fruit roll up. "Paste" it to the snowman's face for the nose.
- Cut a scarf design from a red fruit roll up and paste it around the snowman's neck.
- Finally, cut several strips from the black licorice string and paste it on for the snowman's arms. Two long pieces are for the arms and four small pieces (two for each side) are for the fingers.
- Allow it to dry and then admire.
