Lesson Plan: Civil Rights Timelines

Help students appreciate the contributions of underrepresented segments of society with a timeline lesson plan that focuses on women's and minority rights. These Civil Rights' timelines can be made any time of year, but may be especially useful during Black History Month.

In groups of 2-4, students develop a Civil Rights timeline by noting major time sequences and labeling the timeline with major events. Timelines should include the following:

• A brief description of event or person tracked in time
• Icons or small visual symbols of scenes which identify or characterize major people or events in history

• Is timeline complete, neat, and orderly?
• Are icons clear and meaningful?
• Are events correctly identified?
• Is the language clear, correct, and concise?
• Are spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and other conventions used correctly?

Timeline must focus on the struggles of American women to gain equality from the founding of the United States up until the 19th amendment. Timeline must include at least 4 events per person in group. It must include 5 literary works by women or works which influenced the empowerment of American women, and 10 important female historical figures.
