You will need the following items to make this craft:
3 Cups of Flour
6 Cups of Water
1 Large Mixing Bowl
1 Stack of Newspapers
1 Balloon for each student
3 Bags of black pipe cleaners
4 Tubes of black paint
A paintbrush for each student
1 Ball of yarn
A pair of scissors for each student
2 Packs of construction paper
4 Tubes of glue
2 Rolls of tape
Follow the steps below to create your Halloween Spider:
- Give each child a balloon and instruct them to blow it up. Have them tie each balloon in a knot at the end. Some children may need your help with this step.
- Get out your largest bowl and have one student measure out the flour and another the water. Have a third student mix both items together completely.
- Hand out precut newspaper strips. Each strip should be about 1 inch wide and 8 inches long. Have the students dunk the strips in to the mixture and slide their hands down the strip to get off any excess paste. Then show the children how to lay the strip on their balloon. They need to completely cover the balloon with pasted newspaper strips two times.
- Set out the balloon to dry overnight.
- Have each student paint their balloon black. Again you will have to let the balloons dry. If you do this first thing in the morning you will be able to finish the spider in the afternoon before it is time to go home.
- Each student should get 4 pipe cleaners. Have the students tape the tips to the spiders body and then bend the pipe cleaners to form spider legs.
- Add details to the spider by cutting out shapes from the construction paper. Small white circles make great eyes. Small white triangles make great fangs, and an hourglass shape on the back of the spider makes a great black widow.
- Give each student a long piece of yarn and have them tie it around their spider. The other end can be used when students get home to tie the spider up high. One suggestion is to tie it to a banister and make it look like the spider is crawling up the banister.
Tips:
Tell parents to send their children in to school that day in clothes they don't care about since paper mache is really messy.
