As the economy makes teaching positions more scarce, teachers can keep themselves marketable by adding early childhood certification to their resume. Often teachers with an elementary 1-6 license just need to pass a test to become qualified to teach kindergarten or pre-school.

Getting Ready

Whether you are taking an Early Childhood Praxis as a pre-service teacher or you are currently an elementary school teacher looking to widen the scope of your certification area, this study guide will help you prepare.

The requirements for a teaching license differ by state. Many states require prospective teachers to pass one or more tests in the Praxis II series administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Each state also determines what qualifies as a passing score. So be sure to check your state requirements, and make sure your take the correct test for your state. You can search for the requirements by state on the ETS website.

Early Childhood Praxis II Options

There are several Praxis II tests that apply to early childhood teachers:

1. Early Childhood: Content Knowledge (0022)

The Early Childhood: Content Knowledge exam covers six areas of study with 120 multiple choice questions. The most weight is given to the language and literacy section (36 questions), so you might want to pay special attention to that area. Math comes in second at 30 questions, while Science and Social Studies tie for third place with 17 questions each. There are ten questions about health or P.E. and another ten about art.

2. Education of Young Children (0021)

The Education of Young Children exam gives equal weight to both sections: 60 multiple choice questions and six short answer questions. So, plan to spend about half the time on each section. The test covers child development and how it relates to daily classroom practice. Pay attention to concepts regarding diversity, communication with families, and assessment.

3. Early Childhood Education (0020)

The Early Childhood Education test gives you two hours to answer 120 multiple choice questions about child development and learning. This test emphasizes a child-centered approach to teaching and learning. The majority of the questions are about how children develop -- physically, linguistically, cognitively, and socially -- and what factors influence this development.

Don't Panic

Whichever test you are required to take, there are many resources available to help you prepare for the exam. ETS provides an online study guide for each of the exams, as well as sample questions and answers. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) website has a variety of useful tools as well. Both of these sites can help refresh your memory about early childhood education content.

One important thing to understand as you prepare to take the Praxis is how the multiple choices questions are constructed. Each question has a stem that sets the scene followed by a question. The choices contain the right answer and several "distracters." The distracters could be right, but the answer is the selection that is the most correct. Remember to read through each possible answer and take a minute to reason why you chose your answer. In short, yes -- they are trying to trick you.

So be prepared, be confident, take your time, relax, and eat a good breakfast. You will do fine!
