The Geography ABC’s series is a unique and fun way to supplement your world geography curriculum. This series offers thirty-two countries and two different lesson plans. Each country has the alphabet listed with a fact that pertains to just that country. Geography ABC’s can easily be adapted to any grade level and incorporated into any standing curriculum. A is for Alcazar a castle in Segovia which is a maze of spires and towers.
B is for bull fights, many of Spain’s festivals include bull fights, including the famous event ‘running with the bulls.’
C is for the capital city of Madrid, a city of monuments, museums, and royal palaces.
D is for Donana National park, Spain’s only nature reserve.
E is for the Euskaldunak, who are the people that live in Basques. They have their own language and costumes, including their own national sport, pelota.
F is for flamenco dancing, a noisy but popular dance among the gypsy.
G is for the Galicians which are Celts, and have their own language.
H is for huerta, Spain’s farming region.
I is for the islands of Balearics and Canary
J is for Juan Bravo, a hero that lead his people in a revolt.
K is for King Juan Carlos I, the first democratic monarchy to rule.
L is for languages, Spain has 5 different official languages and 3 unofficial
M is for meseta, the center of Spain that is a flat, dry region.
N is for ninepins, played on an open ground by school children.
O is for olive trees, olives are one of Spain’s most important crops.
P is for the Pyrenees Mountains.
Q is for queso, a Spanish cheese.
R is for the Roman amphitheater at Merida which is 2,000 years old and still used for a yearly theater festival.
S is for soccer, while bullfighting is Spain’s national spectacle, soccer is the biggest sport.
T is for tapas, bite-sized snacks of mushrooms, ham, fried eel, or crayfish.
V is for Vigo, where treasure hunters still come in hopes of discovering a sunken Spanish gold fleet.
W is for the Wild Coast, which refers to the rocky Mediterranean coastline.
X marks the spot
Y is for yellow which was added to the official Spanish flag in 1981.
Z is for Zaragoza, home to the largest Moorish castle, Aljafería.
