Lesson Plans for Geography ABC’s

Below are some idea on how to use the Geography ABC’s in your class room. Most of the ideas listed would easily be adapted to classroom from 5th to 8th grade. These ideas incorporate many different faucets of education not just social studies.

#1 - Did You Know…

Have the students pick a country write an essay using the ABC’s facts. They would need to do some basic research on some of the topics listed. This could be a group assignment or individual. A group might split the alphabet between members and each member takes a turn presenting their letters. Make all 32 geography ABC’s available and have the students make a complied alphabet. For example, A from Thailand, B for Germany, C from Spain, etc.

#2 - Can you guess….

Give each student one country, if your class is larger than 32 you may have to form teams. Each student would try to stump the class, to see how many letters they can name before someone guesses what country they are. They do not have to go in alphabet order.

#3 - Around the world in the ABC’s…

Materials: A large piece of poster board, a complied list of geography ABC’s, some type of maker for each team.

Divide the class into teams. The goal is to complete the alphabet before any of the other teams. The board may contain detours (I.e. captured by the Goths loose a turn, stop to study the Mona Lisa loose a turn) or bonus (I.e. Sail with Franco to the next letter etc). Each team advances one letter at a time unless they land on a detour or bonus. To advance, read a clue from the complied list, (I.e. for A, The Amazon rain forest is the world’s largest, what country is it found in?) The team can confer between it’s members before answering. A suggestion would be to have each team pick a spokes person. The team that reaches “Z” first wins.
