As the education industry is growing the demand for educational consultants is also increasing. Becoming an educational consultant is a lucrative career option. At the same time, it is competitive.

Role of an Educational Consultant

  • Counseling: An educational consultant assesses a student's strengths, weaknesses, desires, and expectations.
  • Guiding: An educational consultant guides the student and the parents to choose the right educational path based on the student's ability and the parent expectations.
  • Providing Right Information: Many times a parent visits an educational consultant who over informs. Parents get lost in tons of information. A good educational consultant provides only two or three options to parents.
  • Handling the Formalities of the Institutes: An educational consultant oversees and guides the admission or entrance formalities to make them error free.
  • Mentoring: An educational consultant’s role doesn’t end with providing admission. He/she should continuously monitor the developments of the student.
  • Visiting Educational institutes: An educational consultant should regularly visit potential educational institutes to review the institute’s latest procedure and standards.

Who is Eligible to Become an Educational Consultant

Teachers, counselors, admission officers, trainers and anybody who has experience of teaching, training and dealing with students is eligible to become an educational consultant.

How to Identify a Good Educational Consultant

  • Experience of the Educational Consultant: Ask or try to find out how long he/she is in educational consulting profession.
  • Visiting Frequency to Institutes: Try to find out how frequently the consultant visits the potential institutes.
  • Certifications: Ask the educational consultant about the professional certifications he/she possesses.
  • Agent or Consultant: A good educational consultant should not be an agent for the institutes to which he or she refers.

Where to Start?

  • Start Small: You can start your education consulting business from home as a part time tutor. As you gain confidence and praise for your good work you can invest more in your office, publicity etc.
  • Publicity: Initially you have to depend on word of mouth. Later on, consider placing local newspaper ads or internet ads.
  • Use Internet: Build a search engine friendly webpage, as many times the parent of a student searches over the internet for an educational consultant.
  • Professional Membership: Once you start growing in the profession you can apply for some professional certifications which will keep you updated with industry best practices.

Conclusion

Educational consulting is a lucrative part time or fulltime profession for teachers, admission officers, and counselors. Success in this field comes from hard work and the passion to mentor students. The requirements for educational consultanting are increasing along with the increasing educational options for students.

TIPS
I like the suggestion of starting out as a tutor before starting a consulting firm. I started a tutoring business and from there began working as a parent advocate which led into consulting. Also, if you would rather work to affect more students and you work for a school, attend trainings and practice training teachers. Get involved with text selection and curriculum development. Get on your school's improvement plan committee. You want to be an EXPERT and not a novice so you will have to be in situations where you can be in the know!
