Facts about the earth

Earth is the third planet in our solar system. Our planet is divided in three layers namely crust, mantle and core. Crust forms the outermost layer, mantle forms the middle layer and core is the innermost layer.

1) Most of us think that the earth is round but actually it is pear in shape. Its bottom bulges out due to rotation.

2) It is believed that earth takes 24 hours to rotate on its own axis but this is not a fact. The actual time taken by the earth is 23 hours, 56 minutes and 4 seconds.

3) Actual duration of a year on the earth is 365.2564 days. This extra .2564 days make the leap year.

4) 70% of the earth surface is covered with water. Our earth is located at a perfect place. It is neither too near nor too far away from the sun. If it would have been so all water would have either boil away or freeze.

5) Atmosphere of the earth is believed to be up to 50 km but actually it is up to 10,000km above the earth surface. Earth’s atmosphere is a mixture of gases out of which 78% is nitrogen, 21% is oxygen and rest is other gases.

6) Earth is the only planet whose name is not derived from the Greco-roman mythology rather it originates from the 8th century Anglo-Saxon word erda, which means ground or soil.

7) You know that earth has only one satellite i.e. moon but an asteroid 3753 also co-orbits the earth and is sometimes called as second moon of the earth.
