Students love learning about the solar system. There is just something about space that kids find fascinating. You can make learning about the solar system even more fun with some awesome art crafts. One such craft involves used plastic water bottles, dye, and beads.

When your class gets to the chapter in science on the solar system you can have them make the following art project.

Items your class will need for the art project:

  1. 1 Plastic Water Bottle for each Student
  2. Water
  3. Black Dye
  4. 8 Beads
  5. 2 Star beads
  6. Star stickers
  7. Sun sticker
  8. Moon sticker
  9. Gold glitter
  10. Electrical tape
  11. Newspapers

Steps you need to take to complete each project:

  1. Give each child to bring in 1 plastic water bottle or bring them in yourself. Gather together all of the other supplies listed above.
  2. Have each child cover their work area with some newspaper to protect their desks.
  3. Use the water bottle to represent space. Take the caps off to insert your solar system pieces.
  4. Place 8 beads inside the plastic bottle to represent the planets. Have your students name the planets as they place the bead in the bottle. Remember Pluto is no longer considered a planet.
  5. Add 2 star beads to go inside of the bottle.
  6. Add gold glitter to represent the rest of the stars in space.
  7. Fill each bottle most of the way with water leaving just a small space for some air.
  8. Add a few drops of black dye and swirl around with a small stick. If you don't have a stick you can put the lid on your water and shake.
  9. To make sure the water doesn't leak out of the bottle use electrical tape to secure the lid.
  10. Decorate the outside of the water bottle with sun, moon, and star stickers.

Your students now have their very own solar system snow globe.

Tips:

Have the students name one fact they learned about each planet, the stars, the sun, and the moon as they add each piece to the plastic bottle.

Have students wear a smock when getting ready to add the dye. This will protect their school clothes.
