Students need to use deductive reasoning to solve fraction word problems. Have fun while teaching fractions by using these fractions word problems to practice math skils with your students.

Fractions Word Problems

These fractions word problems require that students figure out what numbers to use. This helps them practice deductive reasoning while reading fun word problems and practicing fractions.Teaching fractions can't get much funner than that! Write these fractions word problems on the board and have students work them out.

  1. 12 students from the Reading Comic Books Club read comic books on swamp creatures. 4 of the students read about the Swamp Thing and the rest read about the Swamp Witch. What is the fraction of students that read about the Swamp Witch?
  2. The Boy Scouts are working on building bird houses. There are 10 boys in the Wolf Den. 5 boys from the wolf den already have their birdhouses painted. What fraction of boys still have to paint their birdhouses?
  3. Steve, Joe, Tim, Hunter and Larry all went to the pond. All of the boys can swim. 2 of the boys can't swim under water. What fraction of boys can swim under water?
  4. Joe and Todd's fathers both work in an office building. Sarah's dad works on a farm. Tony's dad works in lawn care. What fraction of the fathers work outside? What fraction of the fathers work inside? What fraction of the fathers work?
  5. Carrie spends 1/2 of her 8 hour day playing with children. How many hours a day does she play with children?
  6. Terry has piano practice at five o'clock. Then she has swim practice at six o'clock. At four o'clock she does her homework. Terry enjoys her swim practice and her homework, but is not enjoying her piano practice. What fraction of Terry's activities does she like?
  7. The 15 students in Mr. Harry's class enjoy doing their Science work. 10 of the students enjoy their Spelling. 8 of the students enjoy their reading. Of course, all of the students enjoy their math! Of all the subjects, what fraction of subjects is enjoyed by all the students?
