Put some spark into your math fractions. Make teaching fractions fun with these fractions word problems that enhance the skills of your young learners who are practicing their fractions.

Numbers in Fractions

This lesson plan focuses on students reading fractions using numbers instead of words as in the previous lesson plan. Write the problems below on the board and ask students to work them out.

  1. There are 12 students from Crazy Cow Elementary in the St. Patrick's Day parade. If 5 of those students are girls, what is the fraction for the number of boys in the parade?
  2. For these fractions, name the numerators: 3/5, 1/2, 9/13, 2/5.
  3. For these fractions, name the denominators: 1/3, 7/12, 4/5, 1/6.
  4. Sarah had 3 friends staying the night. Of those three friends, 1 of them like popcorn. 2 of Sarah's friends don't like popcorn. Write out the fractions describing how many liked popcorn. Write out the fraction describing how many didn't like popcorn.
  5. There are 12 eggs in a dozen. Mrs. Frog boiled a dozen eggs for Easter. the children colored the eggs. Write the colors below as a fraction. 3 Pink, 7 Yellow and 2 Purple.
  6. There are 20 students in Mr.YoYo's class. 1/2 of those students were sick on Monday. What is the fraction of children that were sick on Monday?
  7. Mr.Mercury brought 3 frogs to school on Friday for his Science class. 1 of the frogs jumped in Susie's hair. 2 of the frogs ate the flies from Mr. Mercury's collection. Write as a fraction how many frogs jumped in Susie's hair. Write as a fraction how many frogs had flies for lunch.
  8. 2/5 of the students in Ms. Corky's class wore red on Friday. How many students wore red on Friday if there are 5 students in the class?
  9. Billie's mom has 7 children. 2 of those children can climb trees. 3 of the children can swim. 7 of the children are fast runners. What fraction of children are swimmers? What fraction of the children are climbers? What fraction of the children are runners?
