Are you teaching your students about fractions? Have you given them a variety of fraction problems? Do they know all about math fractions? How about putting in some practice with these fun fractions word problems!

Fraction Word Problems

Below are fraction word problems that have the numbers in word form. Use these to have your students practice their understanding of numbers and fractions in word form. Write these on the board for students to work on.

  1. There are twelve pigs on the farm. Three of these pigs ran away. What number will be the denominator for this fraction? Which number will be the numerator? Answer these questions in numbered fraction form as well as the following; What is the fraction for the amount of pigs that left? What is the fraction for the number of pigs remaining?
  2. There are ten students in the class. Half of those students are boys. Write the numbered fraction of students that are boys. Write the numbered fraction of students that are girls.
  3. Nine boys can ride a skateboard. If three of those boys can grind on their skateboard, what fraction of boys can grind on their skateboards? What fraction of boys cannot grind on their skateboard?
  4. Sue, Jenny and Shelly are riding their bikes to school. Sue decides to ride on the sidewalk. What fraction does Sue represent? What fraction do Jenny and Shelly represent?
  5. Eagle Elementary School had a spelling bee. Of the last three students that were left in the spelling bee, only one-third of them could spell the word "numerator". How many of the last three students could spell the word "numerator"?
  6. Billy's mom made a pie. Billy had one slice of pie and Tommy had another. Together, Billy and Tommy had eaten one-half of the pie! How many pieces were in the pie total? If this were a fraction, would the number four be a numerator or denominator?

When students answer these questions, you may want to have them write the fractions in numbers first and in words second so they can practice and understand both ways. For example, an answer could be written 1/2 and one-half.
