Counseling Middle School Girls

Counseling middle school girls can be a difficult task. This age group faces the difficult job of fitting in with peers while balancing school work and home life. Also, some teens in this age group are experimenting in high risk behavior which needs special attention. A middle school counselor can work closely with teachers and parents to identify girls that need extra assistance.

Building Leadership Skills in Middle School Girls

Girls that are struggling with self-esteem and image issues can be encouraged through leadership activities. These activities can greatly enhance their self esteem and build more confidence. Encourage girls with these issues to join school organizations or participate in local volunteer work.

Identifying Issues in your School

Although middle schools across the country face similar issues, each school is different. Meeting with teachers regularly to discuss what middle school girls are talking about is important. For example, teachers may notice an increasing amount of girls struggling with body image issues. In this case, a program could be designed to educate girls about the connection of body image to advertising and explain that only 1% of the population shares the same figure as the models on the cover of magazines. Identifying girls self esteem issues and creating plans to address them will greatly enhance your guidance counseling efforts.

Encourage Activities that Enhance Self Esteem

Girls in this age group are grappling with self esteem issues as they’re making the transition from girls to young women. Work with school administrators and faculty to promote girl sports programs, which enhance leadership and self esteem. Reach out to young women that need a little extra assistance and encourage them to join a team.

Be Proactive about Bullying

In recent years teen bullying has become a serious issue in schools. And many states have taken a hard line on this issue by creating laws that make bullying a crime.

Since junior high girls are high-risk for bullying activity, educate these women about what bullying is and how to stop it. Make your school a zero tolerance bully zone, creating very serious punishments for all students that participate in this activity.
