Mathstart is a series of books that tell a story and teach math. There are three levels to this series each cover ten different topics for the appropriate age group. Level one is aimed at ages 3 and up (Preschool and up). Level two is designed for ages 6 and up (Grades 1 and up). Level focuses on math for 7 and up (Grades 2 and up). The series is designed to correlate with the curriculum standards of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Each book cost about $5.00.

Overview of Level one – ages 3 and up.

This level includes basic math concepts like comparing sizes with bugs, counting by 5s and 10s with lizards, and double numbers with ducks.

Not only are the concepts basic but the words are easy. The graphics are so colorful they seem to leap off the page. The subjects (bugs, ducks, puppies) are guaranteed to hold the wandering attention span of a preschooler.

At the end of each book is a list of suggested extra activities.

These books are ideal for a one on one learning time. While the story would be enjoyed by a group the supplied activities are not generally group orientated. These books would make a great supplement to a group activity on the concept.

In depth look:

A Pair of Socks covers the concept of matching. A sock is on the look out for its match. It searches the laundry, the washer, different dresser drawer and the dryer. When it seems that it will never be worn because it lacks a match, pup grabs it. In pups basket it is reunited with its pair. Only now it has a hole in its heel.

The illustrations are clear and vivid. A preschooler will have no problem seeing the differences in color and patterns.

Some of the extra suggested activities include matching cookies that have the same color frosting. This can be carried over to developing basic patterns (red, yellow, blue, red, yellow, blue, etc). For the suggested craft is matching buttons and stringing them on a necklace.
