Why Teach Introduction

Teaching is a demanding profession, and it is a profession that requires a very patient individual to look after students, especially habitually disruptive students. Though teaching is demanding, most teachers concur that its benefits outweigh the negative aspects associated with teaching.

Why Teach? Top Ten Reasons

1. June and July are two big lures. For the most part, teachers do not have to work during these two months. Teachers do not have to get out of bed and be in class for that first morning bell. Many teachers choose to work during the summer and do the majority of their lesson plans and creating new materials during these months. The summer months are also a good time for teachers to assess their effectiveness. These two months give teachers time to unwind and to prepare for the upcoming school year.

2. Teachers are able to teach during the school year and have time for a second career--writing for BrightHub, adjuncting with another institution, or teaching online.

3. Most teachers have a state retirement system and excellent benefits. In some states, teachers do not pay state income tax or receive a tax credit for working as a teacher. In other states, teachers’ healthcare premiums are footed by the school districts.

4. Teaching is rewarding, especially when you have students who are ready and willing to learn. There is nothing quite like seeing that light bulb go on once a student has caught on to the lesson that is being taught.

5. Teaching is a respectable profession. You are respected in your community for making or attempting to make strides with today’s youths.

6. Teaching gives individuals the opportunity to encourage and influence students. Teachers have an effect and a responsibility to encourage their students to make sound decisions.

7. Holidays and weekends off are a definite plus, especially if a teacher has a family (or doesn't have a family).

8. Teachers are able to see their students achieve success in the classroom as well as in the local community. It is nice to see your former students who receive recognition for their service to their country.

9. Teachers have the opportunity to make positive changes in their students by motivating them to be the best.

10. Did I mention that teachers do not have to report to work during the summer months? It is great knowing that you have two months off to do whatever you please.
