So you decided to be a teacher. What a worthy goal. The rewards can be as never ending as the challenges you meet along the way. To ensure that you and the students benefit as much as possible from your choice to teach, you need to make sure you are teaching in the right area. If you love math, then you are probably the wrong person to be trying to specialize in English. If teenagers drive you nuts, maybe you should consider working with elementary students. But, keep in mind that working in the area you enjoy is just the tip of the iceberg. When you are working with children, you are molding minds and personalities. You owe it to them as well as to yourself to do some research and make sure you are teaching in the area that works best for you. Here are some steps you can take to make sure the specialty you choose is the right one for you.
- List all the specialties you would consider as ones that fit your personality.
- Interview a few teachers in those areas. Perhaps even sit in on a few classes to observe the atmosphere.
- Apply for a Teachers Aid position in order to immerse yourself in the atmosphere that you are aiming to pursue a career in.
- Apply to be a Substitute Teacher. This can be beneficial to you in many ways. You have the potential to work in the area you love. You may be exposed to an area you had not previously considered and may find yourself surprised by the results. Also, being a Substitute Teacher usually puts you at the top of the list for any Teacher's Aid positions that may open up.
- Decide which are you want to work in geographically. This can have an enormous impact on your salary, job openings and the need to be filled. Find out what areas are needed the most.
- Talk to children of all ages and backgrounds. You will be working with these young minds so it might be a good idea to immerse yourself in their world to find out how well it suits you.
- Take notes of your experiences. Review them to determine the reality of the situation. What you had in mind about an experience or area may be completely different from what it is really like.
It's always a good idea to explore all your options. You don't want to spend years in school aiming for a goal that may not even be suitable for you. Educate yourself on what your options are and how you feel about them!
