ABC stands for....

A is for arabesk Turkish music with an Arabic-style

B is for bey, added to Turkish men's name to be polite.

C is for cay bahcesi, the tea gardens of Istanbul which are open to the public.

D is for the dance of halay. When would you do the halay? At weddings.

E is for emir, a Turkish tribal chieftain.

F is for fasil, played by gypsies and considered classical ottoman music.

G is for the giant stone heads of Nermrut Dagi.

H is for hanim, make sure to use this with a woman name to be polite.

I is for the Ishak Pasa Palace built during the Ottoman period.

J is for the Jersey tiger butterfly. This rare butterfly is just on of the many that can be found in the butterfly valley near Oludeniz.

K is for Kizkalesi. Is that castle floating above the water? Is often a question people ask when they first see this maiden castle.

L is for the Laz people, for years the all black clad Laz warriors were the most feared personal bodyguards.

M is for Myra, an ancient Roman city with tombs craved into the side of rocks.

N is for the national flower which is the tulip.

O is for Ozluce underground city. Cappadocia has an estimated 36 underground cities.

P is for Peynir Kayaliklari, rocks that look like cheese and the legend says were actually cheese at one time!

Q is for quick fact, did you know? Yagli gures (greased wrestling) is one of Turkey’s favorite pastimes.

S is for shadow puppets.

T is for Troy, the city from Homer’s Iliad.

U is for Uzunkopru, the ottoman bridge with 173 arches built in 1427 that is still in use today.

V is for village of many names. If you go here be careful! Some will say Assos, which is the old Greek name, or maybe you are at Behramkale, what the locals call it, but official you are at Behra Koyu.

W is for white gold, a light white porous stone mined by locals to sell.

X marks the spot.

Y is for Yanartas, the spontaneous flames that burn in the cervices of Mt. Olympos.

Z is for Zindan. Turkey has over 40,000 caves.
