Teaching online is not just for colleges or trade school anymore. These days more and more teachers are joining up with online K-12 schools and making their impact in the virtual classrooms. Here we will look at the more popular schools hiring online.

Connections Academy

Connections Academy is actually public school through online learning! Students in grades K-12 learn from their home with the help of their parents, or learning coaches as they are called, and the teachers. Teachers use a customized plan for each student, which is tailored to his or her needs. The teacher works with the learning coach to help create an individual learning plan, help with instruction of subjects, and student assessment. All contact is done through telephone, email, or regular mail.

All teachers working with Connections Academy must be certified in the state they will work in and while this is virtual teaching, they must work from the central office they are working with. Currently states who hire include Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Wisconsin. More teaching jobs can be found here.

Kaplan Virtual Education

While Kaplan is best known for its online and distance learning college programs, it is also known for the online high school. Programs are set up to meet the learners needs, such as adult learners without a high school diploma, advanced learners looking to graduate early, at risk teens, teen parents, and even students wishing to take on college prep classes. Kaplan offers online public schooling as well as private schooling for students.

Teaching jobs for Kaplan can be found here. Offering part time, and full time opportunities, most jobs are from the comfort of your home or if stated otherwise they are from the central office. As with other Connections Academy teachers, you must be certified in the state intended to teach in.

eSylvan Learning

eSylvan Learninghires online teachers and tutors who have current teacher certification or lapsed certification (not revoked). Teachers work from the comfort of their own home. Work hours offered are flexible with a minimum amount of work hours being 8 and maximum of 29 hours per work. Training is provided and paid for 6 hours of online training through their system. As an eSylvan teacher you use their technology and their lessons. Jobs can be found here.

There are plenty of opportunities for getting into the online teaching world. These are only a few of the opportunities available. Our next article will look at the requirements needed for teaching online.

Prek-6 education
I am certified in Virginia and currently teach in a first grade classroom. I have the time and technology required to teach elementary students online. I am wondering why Virginia, which does offer online public school options through Virginia Virtual Academy, is not listed as a state that provides this option. I am very interested in becoming blackboard certified and whatever else is required to teach online classes in Virginia because I believe it is the future of education and I don't want to be left behind.

Certified Teachers
Hello all readers!

Thank you for the comments and questions.

I am constantly seeing Connections Academy on career sites such as Careerbuilder and Monster, looking for teachers. I just saw several online teaching positions available the other day.

Remember, the process may take months or even a year before you are hired. Other times there is no waiting game for an online job. Stay patient and send out tons of resumes!

I have taught a variety of grade levels from first grade all the way up to high school math for the last 15 years. My school district has been in economic crisis for a few years now and I have found myself on the RIF list looking for a job. I want to teach and cannot think of any other job that I would enjoy doing. I am looking for an online teaching position in Ohio. If anyone has any advice or info about online schools I would most appreciate it.

Illinois teacher
I am a high school biology teacher searching for an online teaching job. Due to the bad economy and lack of money given to the schools there are a flood of teachers in the market (due to lay offs and hiring freezes) and not enough positions. My sister has taught for an online school and I am very interested. I just do not know where to look besides the one virtual school in Illinois.

I have taught for 4 years as a biology (regular and honors) at the high school level. I have also taught physical science and forensic science at the high school level.
