Over the years I have had a few discipline problems with my daughter during homeschooling time. She is usually a helpful child and not much trouble to raise, but when it came time to sit down and do school work it was like World War III broke out. I sought help immediately since there are a lot of homeschooling parents in my network. I received a lot of helpful tips that I would like to share with you.
Stop and Pray
If you and your child are becoming frustrated during the school day, then it is best that you both stop and pray. Do this together by holding hands. Begin a prayer and let your child finish it. Sometimes taking a five minute break to pray is all that is needed. This is the measure I resort to first.
Make a Pizza Chart
This is my favorite. Create a pizza on a piece of poster board. Leave the pizza plain. Have your child choose the topping they want to be. If you have more than one child this works out great. My daughter loves pepperoni so she was the pepperoni topping. For every day that she participated in school without complaining, throwing a fit, etc. she placed a piece of pepperoni onto the pizza. When the pizza was full of pepperoni, she would get a pizza party. This could be at home or at the restaurant in the next town. It was a great motivator. Make sure to hang the pizza chart where the child can glance at it during the school day. It will serve as a positive behavior reminder.
Take Away
Take away something that the child loves to do. My daughter loves television time. She knows that if she doesn't behave during school time, then she will lose TV time for that day. If your child doesn't watch much television, then take away Nintendo DS or Play-station, for example.
An Extra School Lesson
If my daughter threw a fit during a particular subject, but not during any other subject, then I would give her an extra page in the subject. This really works well, because the child knows that the more they throw a fit, the more work in that subject he or she will have to do. The child will quickly behave to finish and move to the subjects that he or she enjoys.
