Here we will look at the alternate routes individuals may take towards attaining NYC teacher certification. These alternatives may include evaluations, state reciprocity, and National Board Recognization.

Certification

Besides going through an approved NYS teacher’s program there are other options to attaining certification. These other options include Alternative Teacher Preparation Program, Individual Evaluation on U.S. Credentials, Individual Evaluation on Non- U.S. Credentials, Interstate Reciprocity, and National Board Certification.

Alternative Pathways

Alternative Teacher Preparation Program:

  • This program is aimed towards individuals looking to make a career change or mature professionals. Local colleges work with these programs to provide the pedagogical classes needed to become a teacher in NYC. Features include accelerated introductory courses, paid employment, and mentoring. Transitional B or Alternative Programs can be found here.

Individual Evaluation on U.S. Credentials:

  • After searching certification requirements you can send in an application and your U.S. credentials to be evaluated by the State Education Department. If you meet necessary certification requirements you will be issued a certificate. If you do not meet necessary requirements then you will be given a written letter/evaluation stating what you need to meet these requirements.

Individual Evaluation on Non- U.S. Credentials:

  • This process is similar to the U.S. Evaluation, yet the credentials must be translated and notarized in the U.S.A. Other miscellaneous information which is needed here include marksheets, trained teacher’s diploma’s, student books, and diplomas.

Interstate Reciprocity:

  • Two options here are holding a comparable certificate in another state or completion of a teacher approved program in another state. With these options also comes other requirements such as taking the knowledge tests and as with any certificate pathway fingerprint clearance.

National Board Certification:

  • The National Board Pathway means that if an individual holds National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certification then this individual can obtain a NYC Teacher’s certificate without any other educational or testing requirements.

So if you are moving in from another state or just thinking of a career change there are plenty of options to get a teaching certificate in NYC. Our next article will take a look at the Master’s in Education for teachers.
