Touch Math integrates visual cues into learning math to assist students that might otherwise have a difficult time with math.

Touch Math is the single best teaching tool I have ever used. We use the program for our special needs children at our school. Our special education students have learned so well that they teach it to their classmates.

How It Works

  • Begin the program by teaching the "dots" on the numbers: the numeral 1 has one dot on the top, the numeral 2 has one on each end of the number and so on. The number 6 has three dots and circles around the dots and get two counts on each spot. Numerals up to nine continue on with two counts on each dot.
  • Give students papers everyday that count forward and backward, starting at a different number each time. (The program is most effective with students who already can count; otherwise, they understand the concept of the touch points, but still struggle).

This program grows with the student. It teaches subtraction and later multiplication and division. Once you learn the touch points and how to touch the highest number and "count on" you really can do it all. Its also fun. The children look forward to math and they gain confidence because they are so successful.

Touch Math Website

Even the Touch Math Site is colorful and easy to negotiate. The company is great at sending updates by email. They even have a borrowing policy so you can learn how to use the materials. They have free material every month and a lot of things on sale. Go to the site, www.touchmath.com, and you will discover they are not in this for the money. They absolutely believe in the concept of multi sensory learning and wish to benefit those who need it the most.

The sooner you implement this program into the learning process the better for the student. Once they learn it they will never forget it and you will see their confidence soar.
