Homeschooling students shouldn't have to miss out on anything that public and private students get to experience. This includes getting a student ID.

Student and Parent ID Cards

You will need to make two ID cards; one for your child and one for yourself. These IDs should contain photos for optimal use. For both of these ID cards you will need to either buy business card sheets for your printer that match your homeschooling theme, or download some from the Internet.

For Your Child

  1. Place your child's name across the top of the card outline on your computer.
  2. Place the year in the top right hand corner. It should state the school year, for example 2008-2009.
  3. Get a current picture of your child. Make sure it is a close-up of their face. Scan it in to your computer and upload it to the card outline.
  4. Make sure the ID card contains your child's address on the right hand side. A phone number is not necessary.
  5. Give your student an ID number and add it along with the school name across the bottom. One idea for an ID number could be to use your child's birthday.
  6. Print out the card on your printer.
  7. Have your child sign their name on the back of the card.
  8. Laminate the card and cut around the edges so it looks official.

For You

  1. Place your name across the top of the card outline on your computer.
  2. Place the school year date in the top right hand corner. This will look the same as your child's.
  3. Add a current picture of yourself. Make sure it is a head shot like you would see in a passport. If you don't have one go to a store like CVS or Walgreens and order some passport photos. They cost around $8.
  4. Next to your picture add your address, but omit the phone number.
  5. Give yourself an educator number - like the child's ID number, you can use your birthday for this. Make sure you put the words educator number before writing out the number.
  6. Print the card out.
  7. Sign your name on the back of the card.
  8. Laminate the card and cut it out so that it looks official.

Optional step: To help make your student ID cards looks even better, consider creating and adding a school logo to it.

Using the ID Cards

Uses for the Student ID Card:

  • Photo ID to get your own library card
  • Photo ID if you get lost
  • Photo ID if your town has a curfew

Uses for the Parent ID Card:

  • Photo ID to get a library card
  • Photo ID to get special educator discounts
  • Photo ID for when you need proof of your age

RE: Creating Photo ID Cards for Homeschooling
If you were asked to the prom by a member of that particular school, you don't need an ID. If you are just going to show up there, you won't be let in unless you go to that school and have an ID from that school.
