Teaching your preschooler how to learn to count can be a fun activity when you watch this great counting video based on Richard Scarry's popular characters.

Richard Scarry's Best Counting Video Ever: Overview / Summary

richard-scarry-counting-video The video features one of Richard Scarry's characters called Lily Bunny. The story begins with showing Lily Bunny learning how to count from 1 to 10. She finds different things to count from home and in her neighborhood called Busytown.

Once Lily achieves her goal of counting various items from 1 to 10, she proceeds with finding things to count from 11 to 20. Since she does not feel confident about her ability to count by herself past the number 10, she invites her friends Huckle Cat and Lowly Worm to help her. Together, they go around Busytown to count things up to 20.

Rating Good

Although this video may appear old or outdated to some people, it is easy to see why Richard Scarry's characters and stories continue to be well-loved by children even to this day.

Best Counting Video Ever features different characters, counting activities, and songs that help children to learn how to count using different learning styles such as visual (through the animated video) and auditory (through listening to the music and the dialogue). Preschool children may even be involved in kinesthetic learning if they use dance or movement while watching the video, as well as through modeling counting.

My two children, a boy and a girl, have both loved watching Richard Scarry's Best Counting Video Ever when they were beginning to learn to count. Both of them have mastered counting up to 20 by age 2. Although there are other factors that affect their learning, I do believe that educational videos like this one helped to reinforce their natural interest in numbers.

4 Suggested Supplemental Activities for Preschoolers who are Learning How to Count Using Richard Scarry's Best Counting Video Ever

  • Take out things to count while watching the video. Using these items, you can model counting behavior with the child.
  • Plan a "counting day" for your child similar to what Lily Bunny did in the video. Count 1 of something inside your house, or 3 of something in the garden, etc.
  • Consider doing a "number day." You can come up with counting a specific number on a specific day. For example, if you're doing a "7" day, you can serve 7 of something for breakfast, buy 7 of something at the shop, etc.
