This article will talk about the major dilemma that most parents will face at some point. You are returning to work and the next step has to be made. Who looks after your baby? Will it be a quality day care center or a qualified private nanny?

Child Care Dilemma

The decision of who is going to take care of your baby is high up there, as one of the toughest. There are going to be moments where you feel overwhelmed and the possible feelings of guilt will make it even harder, but with good informed information and a lot of patience, it does not need to be a nightmare.

Now a days, the extended family does not really exist, with a lot of families moving out of the cities, the chance of grandparents being around on daily basis is not so much of an option any more.

So, what do we do about child care?

The Child Care Choices

There are two main day care options that most people consider, a day care center (nursery) or a private nanny. As I said planning for this moment needs to be done well in advance especially if you are interested in a particular day care center, as there may be a long waiting list. It also depends on how old your baby is, as to what option is better for you.

There are pros and cons to both of these; I will be looking at the pros of each setting.

Qualified Private Nanny

  1. Baby will receive individualized attention.
  2. Nanny will work around the baby's needs.
  3. Baby is in own, safe environment.
  4. Flexible hours.
  5. Daily outings.
  6. Less possibility of illness.

Quality Day Care

  1. The environment promotes social skills.
  2. Daily activities.
  3. Exposure to different types of stimulation.
  4. Daily routine.
  5. Promotes independence.
  6. Most everything needed is supplied.

Conclusion

Of course the final decision for your choice of child care depends on other factors, mainly the child's needs and personality, your finances and your general feeling.

Talking to other moms and dads in your area and doing some research is a good way to gain information about qualified nannys or daycares in your area. You could also walk by a nursery at, say, play time and home time and see how the children behave and how they are cared for.

Once you have weighed all of the considerations, be confident about your decision and start preparing your child and yourselves for the change. Be patient, you know what they say about new beginnings.
