Introduction

Applying for post-secondary scholarships can be a daunting task, as can be searching for these scholarships. There are thousands of scholarships available, many of which are suited to students in a certain area, or with certain background. Generally, it is a good idea to register for a scholarship search site, which matches your information with scholarship requirements and generates a list of scholarships you would be eligible for, but do not apply to a scholarship search site where you have to pay. For U.S. students, I recommend the College Board. You can also peruse our very own list of scholarships based on need by state. While this is a good starting place, there are also a number of good places where you can find scholarships for secondary education science majors.

National Scholarships

Straightforward Media offers a $500 scholarship every three months to any students who are intending to become teachers. Unlike other scholarships, the check is written out to the recipient rather than the individual, so the money can be put towards textbooks and living expenses if desired.

Phi Delta Kappa International has developed a Future Educator’s Association that offers a number of different scholarships to students enrolled in an education program.

The Coca-Cola Association has dedicated a section of their foundation to education and offers general scholarships, as well as education-specific scholarships.

Paul Douglas Teacher Scholarships offers grants to outstanding secondary school graduates who have taken interest in teaching careers at the pre-school, elementary, or secondary levels.

Where Else to Look

Remember to look at local scholarships as well as awards specific to your school. While they are usually smaller than national scholarships, every little bit counts! Also, don’t overlook your school’s financial aid office and your departmental academic advisor as they are often the best source for scholarships specific to secondary science education.
