How this guide works

This guide will list the top four internal 1TB internal hard drives for a desktop PC. If you’re familiar with my previous guides, there is no particular order in which these hard drives are listed. Of course, you may notice that the list is a little bit light. The reason for that being that there are only a few manufacturers at the moment who produce internal 1TB drives.

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11

Features

  • 5 year warranty
  • Easy to install
  • 32MB buffer
  • Rapid data-access time; one of the fastest around
  • Light on power consumption
  • Competitive pricing

Drawbacks

  • Virus scanning on the disk takes a little longer in comparison to

    other 1TB drives

Western Digital Caviar GreenPower

Costs roughly: $245

Features

  • 3 year warranty
  • Designed to consume less power but without sacrificing productivity

Drawbacks

  • Buffer is only 16MB. It’s not bad, but the Seagate drive contains double by comparison
  • Data-access time is slower compared to other hard drives
  • Gets a little noisy at times
  • A tad expensive

Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000

Costs roughly: $210

Features

  • 3 year warranty
  • One of the first 1TB hard drives available
  • 32MB buffer
  • Performs well under virus scan

Drawbacks

  • Data-access rate is slower compared to other drives, but is mostly steady

Samsung HD103UJ SpinPoint F

Costs roughly: $230

Features

  • Solid data-access rate
  • One of the faster performing hard drives currently on the market
  • Performs with little noise; very quiet

Drawbacks

  • 1 year warranty only
  • A tad pricey
