  • XP SP3 - a worthwhile upgrade?

For businesses still running XP, upgrading to SP3 is a no-brainer (if only to avoid having to install upwards of 100 patches when a new machine is provisioned!). But what about home users? According to Microsoft, SP3 contains only "a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers’ experience with the operating system." But while SP3 may not introduce much new functionality, it does seem to be introducing some new problems (see Users Report More Trouble With Windows XP SP3, for example).

So, what's a home user's best option? Should they stick with SP2 or take a deep breath and upgrade to SP3?

I've got a couple of clients that still run SP2 and point blank refuse to budge! for those very reasons you mentioned above. They trust their other apps to pick up on security and performance. I personally would rather be up to date with everything Microsoft has up their sleeves, as do many I deal with who want to feel the peace of mind that comes with complete Windows coverage (updates). I do however consult for a number of industries and the split is mixed (SP2 or SP3?). I tend to believe its a horses for courses decision and you'd be perfectly happy with either, as long as you have some solid security, firewall and performance monitoring software to accompany the service packs.
