Windows Vista vs Windows XP - which ones on your PC

Windows XP is an operating system that has stood the test of time. It may have had to deal with some pretty serious security deficiencies and can act clunkily after a while but it has rolled with the punches for a long time now, sits beautifully on the vast majority of personal computers around the world and performs as no other operating system has ever done before. This is Windows XP, robust, clean and efficient.

Then we have the new kid on the block, Windows Vista. With advanced graphics and a supreme user interface that makes navigation a breeze it is hard to discount its potential to offer the world everything we need from an operating system. Fast program delivery and a futuristic outlook towards interconnected operability and the end user experience. Windows Vista also eliminates many of the security holes we have grown accustomed to with Microsoft's legacy operating system archtecture.

It is a considerable quandry, and one that end users should not decide upon lightly. Windows Vista or Windows XP... which side of the fence do you sit on?

I have both a windows xp box and a windows vista ultimate machine. The XP box is my home desktop...my wife uses it mostly, and it runs things like AOL and Picasa. She loves it because she knows it. I love it because it just works. Also, the machine is older, and I was really frustrated by the stress Vista puts on a machine.

I really like my Vista laptop. It has 2GB RAM, so that helps, and I enjoy messing around with all the new featuress. But I would caution people...my wireless goes in and out, my bluetooth has never worked, my company antivirus is not compatible, etc. So, I can put up with this stuff because I am used to digging into the internals of the machine to make it work, but I think my wife would have thrown it out the window by now.

Vista Ultimate, which was given as a gift by goold ol' Uncle Bill. That said, had my upgrade path necessitated parting with some currency, I would probably still be using XP Pro. Vista is nice bit, IMO, its far from being a compelling upgrade.

I recently bought a new laptop (I'd like to take this opportunity to say DON'T buy from Dell!) with Vista Home Premium preloaded on it. I must say, a girl loves her accessories! I love the extras - such as the ability to Alt-Tab between windows- and the gadgets are pretty cool too. I'm wireless and haven't run into any problems. In fact, I find the connection is stronger than when I was using XP. But, as Brett said - if I had to pay to upgrade, I don't think I would. I'd rather spend the bucks on a new pair of jeans or something.

For me it's XP right now.  Windows and all the other apps I have running goes slow enough for me as it is, I can't stand the thought of it going any slower with Vista being as much of a resource hog as I hear it is.  I would also caution some users that are more on the novice side of the table and don't like experimenting that while Vista is supposed to be a large improvement in usability, it, and some of the other new Microsoft products such as Office 2007, are different from what you might be used to with XP or Office 2003, so be prepared to spend some time getting used to the new interface.
