Blocking Websites in Internet Explorer

The Internet is full of malicious websites or sites that may not be appropriate for young children. IE lets you block individual websites and also helps you restrict websites using Content Adviser in IE. Learn how to block a website on Internet Explorer, using both methods.

Blocking Website on Internet Explorer – How to Block Individual Websites

To block a particular website, you need to know its URL. Once you find out its URL (or web address), use the following steps to block website in Internet Explorer.

1. Open Internet Options from Control Panel.

2. Go to the Security tab and click on Restricted Sites.

3. Click on the button named sites.

4. In the dialog box you get, type in the URL of the website that you wish to block.

5. Click Add and then OK.

This method should help you in blocking individual websites. If you want further protection, you may use third party websites such as NetNanny.

This method answers the question, “How do I block a website in Internet Explorer?” Though it is effective, it lets you block only a single website at a time. For blocking several similar websites at a time, you need to know how to use the Content Advisor. The following section explains using Content Advisor in IE to block websites in Internet Explorer 5.5 and above

How do I Block a Website on Internet Explorer – Using Content Advisor to block Websites

Content Advisor is a feature in the Internet Explorer that determines the contents of a website and takes the necessary action as instructed by you. You can block most of the websites containing pornography, violence, and other things that you do not want your kids to view.

To access the Content Advisor in IE, open Internet Explorer. Click on Tools and select Internet Options. From there, instead of selecting the Privacy tab, select the Content tab. You can see the Content Advisor option on the top of the window.

1. Click on the Enable button to get a new dialog from where you can configure settings for blocking website on Internet Explorer.

2. The dialog box (see figure below; click to expand) gives you several options to control what your kids can view on Internet Explorer.

Content Advisor Window

3. The Ratings tab offers you with a slider so that you can set the type of content that can be viewed on the Internet Explorer.

4. The Approved Sites tab is similar to the above section. It allows you to allow or restrict different websites. Note that the information in this section overrides the information you filled in using the above method (Section 1).

5. The General tab allows you to create a supervisor password or change password. When there is no password, you will get a button that says Create Password. Once the password is created, the same button is labeled Change Password.

6. Finally, the Advanced tab allows you to select bureau recommendations based on which, the Content Advisor determines how to block a website in Internet Explorer.

Once you successfully apply the settings, you can change them anytime using the Settings button on the Content tab of the Internet Options dialog. You can also choose to disable the settings using the Disable button on the same page. The button that was labeled Enable (see step 1 above), is changed to Disable when you apply the settings.

Note: Though the above mentioned methods on how to block website in Internet Explorer should be sufficient, if you concerned more about how your computer is used, I recommend that you install some Key-Logger software that reveals the history of browsing even if it is deleted from the computer using cleaning tools or Delete Browsing History in Internet Explorer, Tools Menu. This way, you can further keep a check on the websites that are being used. If you find it offensive or dangerous, you can always block it as you now know how to block a website in Internet Explorer!

Hi Joe
You can add particular websites to restricted sites under Security in Internet Options. Firewall too can help. You may also use third party programs like NetNanny.

Arun

Hi Ray
You are correct. I made changes to the article accordingly and removed that Privacy tab method. The changes will appear in a while, after being approved by the editor.
Thanks for bringing the issue to my attention.

Arun

This article "Blocking..."
Hello,
Mr. Kumar should correct his article, to make it clear that what we can manage at the Privacy tab is the blocking of cookies. If he is not willing to amend his article, then it should be removed without further delay. This is because as it stands, it misleads people into believing that they can block web sites in the Privacy tab, when here we can only block cookies.
Regards,
Ray.

Another option
This is a great article! I have also found this program to be useful if you're on Windows. It's called StopDistractions and lets you block distracting websites like Facebook and Twitter!

Worth a download!

Hi Robin
I am sorry there is no method by which you can get the password back or any method to reset the password (not in my knowledge).
I would suggest a reinstall of IE. That may help - I am not sure though.

forgotten password
I blocked one of the computers at work because employees where getting on sites they shouldn't. Now I forgot my password. how do I change it?
Joe Dec 31, 2010 11:21 AM
Not that useful
The biggest drawback to content advisor is if it is unsure of the content it won't let you view the website without entering a password. It's very frustrating - since you can't just browse randomly without constant prompting. It's so annoying to use I'm sure nobody even bothers. What they need is a way for you to just enter a list of websites that won't work on your browser. You can enter websites to block cookies so it seems silly you can't ban websites from your browser without all the hassle. Maybe Windows Firewall will do this?

Fixed it
Okay I found out the problem that I and other people were doing. When you go to Tools/Internet Options/Privacy in Internet Explorer and then click on Sites you are just blocking the cookies only. It will still allow the website to be viewed.

However if you go to Tools/Internet Options/Content and Enable this and then go to Approved Sites then you can just add the website that you want to block there and it will work.

Most people like me and others tries to block under the Privacy Settings and not the Content Settings.

Yeah K9 Web Protection is great especially for protecting children. I don't know how well Internet Explorer does on protecting children because I have never used it before.

Hi Tony
Thanks for giving us a workaround. It will help many.
Personally, I never had problems blocking a website. What happens is that most of the websites redirect to some other URLs making it difficult to assume what it could be. For example, if I were to block Google, I would wait for the page to appear and copy the URL from address bar (http://google.co.in) instead of typing just google.com in the block list. Try this method and let me know if you still face problems.
Anyways, the software you mentioned is also a great add-on. I will sure check it out.

Block Individual Websites
When I try to block any website using the first method mention it never works. Also I already have a list of blocked website already saved but if I type the URL of the blocked website then I can access it so easily. Blocking indivdual websites with IE 8 & 9 does not work and never did. I've tried this method on many different computers and the results are always the same.

So I had to use a software like K9 Web Protection and it blocks the websites that I want and allows those that I want to use without annoying pop-ups and its free. I wish IE filters would work because it is part of the browser.

Hi Yara
The problem with craiglist and similar websites is that they redirect to some other URLs. So if you simply type http://craiglist.com in the Internet Options box, it wont help. Let the entire page open and then copy paste the URL from Address bar. For example, when I type craiglist.com in my address bar,, it redirects to http://kerala.craigslist.co.in/. So if I have to block it, I will be typing the above address in it.
Hope this helps.

No luck
I just checked, I can still access the website. I've done the whole process again, with no luck. (I've also very accurately clicked "block" and "never")
Using the Content Advisor, works, but I have to constently type my password for EVERY website like Google.
What I need is to block one website (craigslist). If you could perhaps tell me of another method would be great, thanks for your help.
Arun Kumar, MVP Dec 7, 2010 3:01 AM
Hi Yara
Please check it again to see if you have set up the website to Allow or Deny. Or I would recommend removing it and adding it to the Deny list again. This always works. Please let me know if you have the settings right but still the website is coming up.

Problem
I've tried blocking a single website using the first method you mentioned, but the website is still easily accesible. The content advisor method, blocks everything, and I have to constantly keep typing my password. I just need to block ONE website, but view all the other websites without having to type the password, over and over. Can you please help?

Hi Nick
Though the comment is not related to this article, I checked it out by trying to get a certificate. I guess it is a website problem. You may try after some time.

Hi Pankaj
The steps to block websites in Windows 7 are almost same as they are in XP. You need to open Internet Options from Control Panel. Go to the Content tab and click Enable under Content Advisor. You will get a dialog box where you type in the URL of the website and click on NEVER (under Approved Sites tab).

blocking some of the sites in mobile
Plz let me know the ways to block some of the websites from mobile internet
Arun Kumar, MVP May 13, 2010 3:19 AM
Hi AMITS
The page is opening fine here. Normally, when IE8 gives out the message "Page not Found", hitting F5 or pressing the Refresh button should load the page.
If the behavior is different in your case, I suggest you go for a reset. You can find the RESET option on the Advanced Tab of Internet Options (under Tools menu). This should fix the problem.

Hi Gaurav
Please take a look at the second part of the article. The content advisor reads the metadata and description of webpages and bans them accordingly. You can use it to ban porn sites. The only cases where it will fail is where the webmaster gives out a false site description. For cases that fail, you can use the Restricted Sites option.

Hope this helps!

Blocking a Website
Hi,

Is there any way that I can block the particular types of website... Like I want to block all the porn websites on my computer. Not by entering the URLs. I want to block all the websites which contains pornography.

I am using Windows XP Professional and Internet Explorer 8
