If you are tired of using Windows Media Player 10 and want to upgrade to the newest version of Windows Media Player, read on to find out how?

About

Windows Media Player comes installed on your system when you install the Windows operating system. It will play nearly any type of media, as long as it has the codec (encoder/decoder), and if not, you can get codecs from a variety of sources that will allow it to play. Many people use it to play their MP3 files.

Windows Media Player will periodically be updated, but the computer will always install the version that was in use during the release of your OS, so if you want to upgrade it to get the newest version, all you need to do is follow these steps.

Step One

Visit Microsoft's web site. Go to the Download Center (on the right side of the screen) after choosing the country of residence. Now, you'll need to look on the left hand side of your screen, and in the second section "Download Categories", you'll see "Windows Media". Select this option.

Step Two

At the top of the screen, you'll see an option to "Download Windows Media Player 11". Click this link. Your copy of Windows will be validated, so if you are not using a genuine copy of Windows, you will not be able to download this update. Below this option, you'll also see a list of Windows Media Player related updates, including codecs and security fixes. You can download any or all of these updates, but you should really only download ones that you know you need.

Step Three

Allow the download to complete, and follow the on screen instructions to install the program. Be sure that your current Windows Media Player is not running, and that you are connected to the internet.

Tips, Warnings, and Other Information

  • All your media and settings from your previous version should be in place.
