Making Postcards in Microsoft Word

If you need to mail out a message that is not long enough to fill a whole page, consider using Microsoft Word to easily create and print unique postcards

Creating Postcards in Word

When you need to send out a letter, you probably turn to Microsoft Word so you can type it up and print it out. If the message you need to send out is not long enough to fill a whole page, though, a letter might seem a bit much. If you need to send the same note – or one of a similar length, anyway – to several different recipients, you can print postcards in Microsoft Word.

Word can help you make postcards that are as elaborate or simple as you like. For instance, you can create plain white postcards with your note typed on one side and the recipients address on the other. On the other hand, you can make decorative postcards with graphics appropriate to send out for holidays or birthdays.

To make postcards in Word, start with a new blank document. If you want a graphic on them, insert a clip art picture or one from your computer onto the blank page. Drag one corner of the picture so that it is five inches wide by four inches high. Click on the picture to select it.

If you are using Word 2003 or earlier, point to Letters and Mailings on the Tools menu. Click on Envelopes and Labels, and click on the Labels tab. Click the Options button and choose a Postcard label option. Click OK. Choose Full Page of Same Label and then click the New Document button.

If you are using Word 2007, click the Mailings tab after inserting and selecting your graphic. Click the Labels button in the Create group. Click on the Labels tab. Choose a postcard in the Label section and then click the New Document button.

If you only want text on your postcards, follow the same steps as listed above, except without inserting a graphic first. Type your notes onto the postcards and then print them.

Re: White Border
Hi Laura,

I suggest changing the page margins. You can do this in the Page Setup dialog box, or drag the vertical and horizontal rulers across the top and side of the document.

I hope that helps!

White border on postcards
I'm using avery postcards as an auction ticket (4 per page). My problem is that I get a white border around the entire page of postcards...when I pull them apart, each one is not uniform. The top left postcard has a white border on the left and top sides .( I have a background color on the postcards)so it's very noticeable and not too professional looking. Any suggestions on what to do?

Hi Victor!

When you open the Envelopes and Labels dialog, go to the Labels tab and click the Options button. If you do not see any "postcards" in the "product number" list, change the selection in the "Vendor" list. Avery US Letter is a good option. Then all you need to do is scroll down the "Product Number" list until you find a postcard template.

Hope this helps!

Re: postcards in 2010
Hi Nancy,

Go to the Mailings tab and click Labels. Click the Options button to open Label Options. Select Avery US Letter in the Label Vendors list. Scroll down until you find a postcard you want to use, such as 3263.

I hope that helps!

RE: Making Postcards in Microsoft Word
Hi Eva,

One way to print something on both sides of the postcards is to create two separate documents. Make one document with the front side of all of your postcards and another with the back. Print one side, put the paper back in so that it will print on the back of your postcards and print onto the opposite side. All printers are different, so you will need to determine which way the paper should go for the backs of the postcards.

I hope this helps!

Jennifer,
What version of Word are you using, and at what step do you see this error?

having trouble with postcards
I can't get this to work. It keeps telling me either "the number must be between 1 and 31" . I don't know what that means and can't find any place to put in numbers anyway.

Hello! I'm sorry, but your explanation was a little confusing and hard for me to follow. However, it was helpful in a way because it gave me an idea on how to make a postcard. In your next explanation I would suggest that you write more specific instructions because, like I said before, it was hard for me to follow.
