So, you got yourself a spiffy new hand held device or smart phone and you want to go off and do some serious work with it and maybe spend a little bit of time impressing your friends on the side. After all, they went and rubbed it in your face when they got that iPhone. You deserve a chance to have your own technology moment in the sun and, if possible, make them incredibly jealous.

Today we’re going to look at how to get your new Windows Mobile device onto the Internet. Then you can send those friends an email from wherever you are. (After all, if you don’t, how will you set up times to meet them and show off your new toy?)

Step One: Make sure you are in a place with open Wi-Fi. Now, I know that one seems silly, but you need to be sure that there is a network or you will never get a connection, and you will need it to be open, because if you try and get into a secured network where you don’t belong that is hacking, and I can’t condone that.

Step Two: Get to your network settings. To do this click on the following sequence ‘Start’ then ‘Settings’ then ‘Connections’ and finally ‘Connections’. No, that is not a misprint, you are going to have to do that twice.

Step Three: Click on the tab labeled ‘Advanced’.

Step Four: Now choose the words ‘Select networks’. You will now find yourself on the Network Management page.

Step Five: You will see two fields on this screen. Set both of these fields to My Work Network.

Step Six: Tap on the first word ‘Edit’ that you see.

Step Seven: Check the box next to the words “This network connects to the Internet”.

Step Eight: Tap the word ‘OK’.

Step Nine: Choose the second word ‘Edit’ and tap on it.

Step Ten: Check the box next to the words “This network connects to the Internet”.

Step Eleven: Go to your ‘Configure Network Adapters’ screen and tab on the down arrow that you see on the screen.

Step Twelve: Your default setting will be under “My network card connects to” will be “The Internet”, go ahead and change that to “Work.”.

Step Thirteen: Click on the words “WLAN utility” (this may vary slightly based on your device) and make sure that the radio button next to the words “Use server-assigned IP address” has the circle filled in.

Step Fourteen: Now you can tap on the words “Name Servers”, all you are here to do is make sure that it is blank. Then click on ‘OK’.

Your Windows Mobile 5 should now be able to connect to the wireless network, and this attempt should occur automatically when you have a network in range. Now, I know that was a lot of steps, but take heart, you should only have to do this once, barring something drastic happening, that is, so you can enjoy your Wi-Fi connection now and later.
