Sometimes a virus, spyware or other malware gets through our defenses. At that point we need an effective tool to detect and remove that malware and clean our computer system. VirusKeeper offers Multi Virus Cleaner 2009 to meet that need. Does it measure up?
Introduction
Multi Virus Cleaner 2009 from VirusKeeper is a stand-alone virus removal utility. As a removal tool it is not intended to replace or obviate the need for a regular anti-virus program or a security suite. Instead, it can be used for help when cleaning infections by viruses, spyware, or other malware. You may need tools like this if an anti-virus program was out-of-date, disabled, uninstalled, or bypassed and a virus or other malware infected the computer undetected. Often once infected the anti-virus security software is blocked from removing the virus, so a cleanup tool is needed. Let's see how Multi Virus Cleaner 2009 measures up.
Features
Rating
Multi Virus Cleaner has a database of over 6,400 viruses, worms, trojans, and other malware. Updates are available from the Viruskeeper website and there is a link built in to the program directing users to the web page. I did find this potentially problematic, since if a virus had disabled the Web browser or Internet access the link would fail. This is not a major concern since likely the user would have downloaded a copy separately and copied it to an infected system. Still, a Web link rather than a dynamic update via the program itself is extremely simple, for good or bad. Reporting was minimal, and didn't list the total number of files scanned. Settings are limited to prompt for action or remove automatically--that's it. Scan types include Quick (at risk and system files only), Full, Deep, or Custom. Additional scans include full memory scan and additional spyware scans.
Install and Ease of Use
Rating
Multi Virus Cleaner installed easily and ran rapidly in quick mode, which checks only at-risk and system files for infection.

The simple interface and easy-to-understand options make it a good choice for ordinary users, and system administrators will find it fast and effective. Multi Virus Cleaner doesn't provide a stand-alone boot disk, or other means to bypass OS restrictions that malware might put in place, and it's not the most comprehensive and detailed virus removal tool in existence, but it's a simple, user-friendly, effective virus and spyware cleaner that will likely get the job done for you.
Overall
Rating
Multi Virus Cleaner 2009 isn't the most comprehensive, isn't the most full featured, and not the most versatile malware removal tool I've used, but despite all these limitations, it has merit. It's likely to detect and remove the run-of-the-mill virus you encounter, and it is small and easy enough to copy and install that you will be able to use it quickly and without hassle. Since it's free it can't hurt to keep it on hand in the event that some malware manages to get past your defenses and infect a system.
