A commonly asked question is whether or not McAfee is available for free. Read on for more information, as well as other alternatives you may find intriguing.
Free or Bust
While there is certainly a lot of capable software out there that is available for free, unfortunately McAfee is not included as one of them. You can, of course, get a free trial of the software for 30 days (or 90 days if you live in the US), but after that you will have to purchase a subscription. So if you wanted to try the software before buying it, this is probably the best way to go.
If your concern is more centered towards whether or not there are free antivirus and antimalware programs available, then the answer to that would be ‘yes.’
Reviews
While there is a wealth of free antivirus programs available, fortunately Bright Hub has included extensive reviews of the different types of software. To learn more about each product, check out the review, and decide from there which version you’d like to give a try.
Of course, if you are interested in free trials, Norton does offer 30 days for free on a different variety of programs, and Windows Live OneCare offers a whopping 90 day trial with theirs.
avast! antivirus
avast! is probably one of the most popular and widely used free antivirus programs made available. We have a review of this product available here.
Microsoft Security Essentials
This fresh antivirus and antispyware protection from Microsoft has just come out of beta, and is available for asbolutely free with any genuine copy of Windows XP, Vista or 7. A review of the beta version was released back in June, and even for that it received a positive response.
Comodo
This particular program has grown to be more popular in the past year, due to its firewall capabilities. Of course, the free version does have some limitations in comparison with a purchased subscription, but it is still held in high regard overall, as its antivirus capabilities are also growing. A review of this product can be found here.
PC Tools Antivirus
Award-winning antimalware software from PC Tools has grown to be known amongst the likes of Norton and McAfee in recent years, and its free antivirus program is also receiving a high amount of praise. To read more about it, a review is available here.
AntiVir
AntiVir is known to provide perhaps better protection than a lot of other programs you need to pay for. Protection from malware as well as viruses, there’s not much more you can ask from a free program. Full review of this product can be found here.
AVG
Another well-known name of free antivirus software, it is not held in quite high regard as Avast due to its limited features (most likely used as marketing to get you to purchase a subscription). But it still does offer protection and is better than not having any at all. The review can be found here.
The Aftermath
While it is disappointing that powerful software like McAfee is only available for free by trial only, this shouldn't discourage you from protecting your computer with free alternatives. So by taking some time to read the available reviews we have here, you should be able to better broaden your knowledge of free software that's right at your fingertips.
