How Do I Find My Computer’s WPA Key?

WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) is an advancement over WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy). While connecting to a home network, you are often asked to insert a WPA key or a password to which users often ask, "How Do I Find My Computer’s WPA Key?". Read more to find your computer's WPA key...

What is WPA?

WPA stands for Wi-Fi Protected Access. It is a standard security protocol implemented by Wi-Fi alliance to secure wireless computer networks. WPA standard is advancement over WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) standard that had several security issues. WPA implements most of the IEEE 802.11i standard and provides greater security than WEP.

While connecting to your home network, you are often asked to insert a WPA key. This WPA key is either located in the modem or in the router you are using. In order to find your computer’s WPA key, follow the steps given below:

How to find your computer's WPA key

Step 1: First of all, you need to launch an internet browser. Press “Windows + R” keys to open the “Run” prompt and type “iexplore” without quotes to open Internet Explorer. You can also type “firefox” to open Mozilla Firefox. On the address bar at the top, type http://192.168.1.1 (Belkin routers use 192.168.2.1 as the default IP) and press “Enter” key.

This address belongs to your wireless modem or wireless router to which you are connected.

Step 2: A window asking for username and password will appear. In the username field, type “admin” without quotes and in the password field, either type “password” without quotes or leave the password field blank. Press “Enter” key to continue.

If password is correct, you will be redirected to the modem/router’s “Settings” page, otherwise, you will have to reset the modem/router. Check beneath the modem/router or check the manual for correct password.

To reset a Linksys modem/router or Belkin one, locate a small hole at the back of the modem/router and insert a pin to press the switch inside it. Keep the switch pressed for about 20-30 seconds after which the modem/router will restore the settings to “factory defaults” and reboot itself.

Repeat the step 2, in order to gain access to “Settings” page.

Step 3: On the modem/router’s “Settings” page, find “Wireless” option. Click the “Wireless” link to populate the wireless settings. Now, locate and click the “Security” or “Advanced Security” option.

On the security page, you will find “Network Authentication”. Different options available under the Network Authentication menu are open, shared, WEP, WPA, WPA2, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, etc. Select either WPA or WPA2, to find your computer’s WPA key and insert this key when asked for.

If in step 2, you had reset the modem/router, you will not find any WPA or WPA2 key, and you will have to manually assign one. Select any of the WPA-PSK or any other authentication and assign a key to it. A key can be 8-63 long. For minimal security, you can choose 8 characters key, like “iN\/5R92”. For maximum security, choose 63 characters key like, “sJ0esmoU2cBD\m+oMp$nrXj5XPVRTvVA5fpwGSGI\RVz4RdQ7V3y\l$P1NrT9Be”.

After you have assigned a key, save/apply the changes and reboot the modem/router.

Note: The procedure shown above is common to most of the modems/routers. If this doesn’t apply to you, check your modem/router’s manual to find the wireless security option.

Hi Jimoh

Posting your MAC id is never a good idea. I would recommend that you check out the manual for resetting your DLink router. The network key is always assigned by either the user or the ISP

RE: How Do I Find My Computer’s WPA Key?
That's strange as your Wi-Fi printer shouldn't ask for a WPA key, if you are directly connecting it to your computer.

RE: How Do I Find My Computer’s WPA Key?
This is the standard url link for most of the routers. You need to check with your router's manufacturer to check the url.

Actually, this is the gateway ip

Add 3rd computer
I have the same problem as Don whom I've quoted below:

Don
Need to retrieve key
I want to add another computer to my home wireless router. I have 2 computers already using the router. However, I have misplaced the password so I can't get the new computer to access the internet through the router. Can I retrieve the password from my existing computers? I really don't want to reset the router and go that route.

It must be on both the other computers; how do I extract it?

You may be able to recover it with some sort of software that reveals asterisks

You will see both username and password. If you are only seeing password then it must be something different.

Yoshi, in that case you should check your router or modem's manufacturer website

RE: How Do I Find My Computer’s WPA Key?
Hi

First you need to check the ip address allocated to your router. Generally, its 192.168.1.1 but may differ.

Go to command prompt, type ipconfig and press enter.

There you will find gateway ip, that's the ip you should type in the browser.

RE: How Do I Find My Computer’s WPA Key?
HI H J

You first need to tell me the version of Windows you are using? Also, if you open the computer icon located in the system tray. What exactly do you see?

If you can tell me the Windows version, I shall be able to help you in a better manner.

Thanks

RE: How Do I Find My Computer’s WPA Key?
Hi Steven

user - admin and pass - password are the default credentials. If that doesn't work for you then as mentioned by Jack, you can always contact the manufacturer. Or, try searching on internet about the default credentials to log in into the router

Thanks

SIW
There is a much easier way, download SIW (System Information Windows) It can pull all sorts of useful info on any windows machine. Under Wireless you can see all wifi keys to any networks you have connected to. SIW has a freeware version. You can also use Eureka built-in to reveal any * passwords.

A Shortcut.
I think this is kinda long process, u can try this shortcut.
1) Click on the network icon in your task bar.
2) Right click on your network.
3) Click property
4) A window will appear, on that window check the "SHOW CHARACTERS"
Note: This only applies to windows seven users.

To no avail
I get as far as the "http://..." part before failing. The address doesn't load, all I get is "Internet Explorer cannot display this webpage". Pretty similar, if not identical, to Chris (Page 1). Why is this going wrong, is it something I'm doing? Help please.

Makes sence
to locate your WPA (if your a bit slow and forget it) you have to go through your setup to obtain it like the article states. if you could just 'find' you WPA you network woudn't be very secure as any joe blow would access you network. you need admin rights to locate it and alter it if need be. default setting like IP addresses, usernames and passwords can usually be found under the router or in the documentation. worse comes to worse, restart your router and start from scratch and carefully follow the prompts. goodluck and happy hacking

PS, don't get netgear, lol. and comment with positive, contructive questions. your outbursts just show everyone how ignorant you are :-)

RE: How Do I Find My Computer’s WPA Key?
how do you use nirsoft
John Dec 27, 2009 1:37 PM
This is stupid.
This is one of the dumbest articles I've ever read. The title of "finding your computer's WPA key" is 100% misleading as this has NOTHING to do with locating your WPA key.

The title should be more aptly named "Resetting your WPA key if it gets lost" or "For those who don't read the manual of their router".
Sam Aug 9, 2009 12:00 PM
Recover instead of reset.
Why reset your password every time you forget it when you can just recover it from a computer where it is already configured? There are free tools which will allow you to do this such as the Wireless Key Viewer by NirSoft.

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/wireless_key.html
