Is Microsoft Forefront the Antivirus Vendor Killer?

Wondering what Microsoft Forefront is? Read on inside to see whether or not it can stand up to the current antivirus giants.

Repackaged

I love talk of something being the “blank-killer.” Killzone was supposed to be the Halo-killer and now, rumors are floating around that Microsoft’s new Forefront service will kill the antivirus sellers out there. The reason I enjoy these names so much is because every time one comes around, debunking the myth becomes easier and easier. Let’s analyze some reasons why Forefront is not going to be killing the antivirus vendor business anytime soon.

Reason # 1 – Established Names are here to stay

When I say Avira, Avast, Nod32, or F-Secure, the first thing that pops to mind is the word “Antivirus.” The reason being that every year, these companies shell out huge amounts of money to not only make sure that their names stay in the public eye, but also to make sure that they stay on top - fighting an odd antivirus arms race against one another for your yearly payments. Microsoft is an enormous contender, but the public has a clear perception that Microsoft products outside of the OS and Office branded lines are essentially packaged junk.

As such, these big names in antivirus programs are always competing and selling better products. Companies like ESET and F-Secure have enormous research teams for developing antivirus solutions. As much money as Microsoft pours into their antivirus research, it’s hard to compete with an established name that is specialized in one area – which makes it clear that they will probably fail once more.

Reason # 2 – Bought a Microsoft Product besides Office or Windows lately?

Ask anyone who bought the Live service last year or perhaps even the last three failed attempts by Microsoft to break into the firewall and antivirus game, and they will tell you that the products did not compare with commercially available third-party vendors.

Moreover, there is no reason to think that Forefront will be changing the game anytime soon. Even though the client and server model is tried and tested, Microsoft products have a nasty history of being overpriced and under-developed. The products typically lose support as a result of few people buying into them. Therefore, you are left with an overpriced lemon rotting away inside your hard drive.

Reason # 3 – Seen this Story Before…

Microsoft is not new to trying to break into the antivirus game. They have endeavored with their upgrades to the Live service and to the Windows Defender system. However, having used F-Secure for several years and having recently bought ESET’s NOD32, it is clear that nobody will be debunking these great products.

The other issue associated with Microsoft’s products is their enormous size. I have yet to see a product come out of their labs that is as light as the typical antivirus product, even those that are free, like AVG or AVAST!

Feel free to try out the Forefront demo if you like, but unless I have made some serious errors in judgment (or Microsoft really is turning over a new leaf), this is likely to be yet another failure in a long line of products that just didn’t live up to their potential.

RE: Is Microsoft Forefront the Antivirus Vendor Killer?
I'm a system admin for a large company and i tell you Forefront is the best business AV there is. easy to admin, very fast, light footprint on clients and its has one of the highest detection and removal rates in the game. Then the price, its basically free if you manage your licences.

Lightening Fast
I was skeptical over forefront too, but after using it for quite some time, i have to conclude that it has proven to be the best anti-virus for me. Reasons:

- It is lightening fast, binds with the kernel and does not slow the pc at all

-its non intrusive, all definition updates come in when i update windows, so no pop up screens from anti viruses telling me to update

-it keeps a good eye on the file system, and catches virus files as soon as they are saved, even tho other anti virus do this, with forefront it is seemless because it works directly with the file-system apis, and binds with the kernel.

My experience with forefront has been 10/10

NIS 2010 is the best
Anyone who still says Norton is slow and a bloated software should try NIS 2010 or newest 2011. I had long abandoned Norton but since 2009 many people said the old good Norton is back. Eventually I tried Norton 360 which is essentially the same as NIS 2010 and I am telling you: IT IS AMAZING. The software is light, fast and effective. Its firewall never asked me whether I need to allow a program to connect to net.
I was using Antivir premium before I switched to NIS. Try it and you won't be disappointed.

Time to DIS the NIS
I've been trying to run Norton Internet Security on Windows 7 x64 for, well, since it was released.

Nothing but headaches and trouble.

The main reaon that I was still running NIS is that you could pick it up at some stores for free after rebate. Not really a bargain considering the time costs.

I'm seriously tired of the bloatware antivirus products from Symantec, McAffee and the like that require an extra gig of RAM and an extra processor core in order to even run.

I installed Forefront on my desktop today and after the updates were done, it runs like a champ.

You can run Forefront on a single computer or manage it in the enterprise.

Lets look at the benefits:

Forefront is:

Less expensive
Has a smaller footprint
Users can't tell it's running
It uses Windows Update Services, no need for a 3rd party update
Install takes only seconds
It runs perfectly in Windows 7 64bit

Like the author, I can be skeptical of Microsoft when it comes to new software, but this is a game changer.

The major AV products drug their feet on spyware and malware for years and when they finally decided to incorporate these features into their product, it was unusable for many people.

Forefront may be the only client security product that I reccomend to my customers.

clean the computer from virus
I change from Norton to McAfee and I started to have trojans and Internet Explorer do not work anymore

One more thing...
Ever try to get tech support from Microsoft for an email problem (or anything, really)?

First thing they insist on is disable the AV protection.

Unless you happen to be running MS Security Essentials. That, they're ok with leaving in place.

That speaks volumes, to me.

Tried MS Security Essentials?
You should try MS Security Essentials. Free antivirus for home/personal use. Fantastic AV client, unobtrusive and light-weight. NOD32 is a good AV client, but it's not free. AVG, Avira, Avast... these all offer free versions that have grown to be more trouble than the price is worth. Recent versions of Norton have improved greatly over the bloatware they've been in the past, but there are still regular issues with renewing, and upselling for the home versions. Just terrible.

MSSE is a breath of fresh air that I see sweeping the tech-friendly crowd like a storm. I've been installing it for all personal clients, friends and family, including several of my own machines, for months now, and everyone (including myself) has been extremely happy with it. It's silent, unobtrusive, and VERY light weight, yet tests have shown it to be among the tops at effectiveness. It updates silently, and they're not trying to upsell you anything, No constant advice to go for the "Pro" version or the "Internet Security" version for "better protection, and no hunting for the way to stay free when a new version comes out... an annual annoyance that starts months before the actual end of the year. I haven't been this pleased with an AV product for a very long time.

As I understand it, Forefront uses the same engine, for corporate users, plus centralized management. You can bet I'll be giving it VERY serious consideration as soon as our current AV subscription comes up for renewal.
