In many Hollywood movies, computer viruses are displayed as some sort of animated character eating away at the screen or doing something that makes their presence quite obvious. A good example would be the virus that Jeff Goldblum uploaded (with a Mac, no less) to the alien mothership in Independence Day.
In real life, many viruses do nothing to make themselves known. In fact, they disguise themselves so well that you'd never even know they were there. The job of computer support technicians all across the world would be much easier if all viruses announced themselves like they do in the movies. Instead, you have to look at the symptoms and figure out whether or not the computer is infected or if there is some other problem. Find out if you can tell virus symptoms apart from normal computer behaviour in our quiz.
