As a freelancer, I felt that the Cashbook solution might work best for me. I downloaded the free trial and put it to the test. The user interface is simple and straightforward. I set up my company file and my client list in under five minutes. While I’ve yet to set up my banking information, I feel confident that I can learn the basics within a few hours, thanks to the detailed user manual.
FirstEdge from Acclivity is a robust, streamlined accounting software that allows you more features than a basic general ledger system. Manage your banking, sales, customers, vendors, inventory and job costing.
If you are new to the accounting process, the Help feature will explain in step-by-step detail how to use each feature of FirstEdge. After trying out FirstEdge, I came away both impressed with its capabilities and intimidated by the accounting process. This is way more than I need for my business, but I can see my sister-in-law using it for hers.
AccountEdge is made by the same company as FirstEdge, packed with a plethora of features for small and medium-sized businesses. Add Business Services to include credit card processing, payroll and direct deposit. Additional add-ons include Daylight, Reservations 5.0, Staff Files, Customer Relations Management and more.
Billings is part invoicing software, part project manager made especially for freelancers. Import your client contacts from your Address Book or enter them manually. Keep track of your invoices so that you will know which clients have paid you and which ones still owe you money.
You can send quotes to prospective clients and friendly reminder statements to clients who are late with their payment, using one of the 30 built-in templates or designed with your own logo. The reports feature helps you to get a bird's eye view of your client activities, and to see how much money you have made or lost.
I like the fact that there is a back up feature because I would hate to have to re-enter all of my data should my hard drive crash. While it doesn't have all of the bells and whistles that an average accounting software would have, it is suitable for freelancers who need a simple interface to help them keep track of their receivables.
