Bento App Review: Know What You Have and Where It Is

Your digital life depends upon knowing what you have and where it is. So what do you do when you're away from the Mac? Get the Bento app for your iPod Touch, is what. Not only will it take care of your mobile needs, it will integrate back with the Bento database at home.

Where You Are Doesn't Matter

BentoIf you’re like me, the Mac at home is not just a tool for work or play, but your personal memory about the movies and music and photos and just about everything else that constitutes today’s “digital” lifestyle. A while ago I pulled back my fears of using a database program and got Bento. I was happy I did because it was powerful, but still approachable enough to give me a leg up on the learning curve for using it.

But just like getting my best ideas in the shower where I can’t write them down - there wasn’t any way for me to manage or add to my ever-growing database when I wasn’t at home. Until I took a quick trip to the app store and got the Bento app, that is.

Don't Think, Database It

BentoNow it's a fact that the Filemaker Bento program is a powerful Mac software database that lets you organize your collections and libraries and pretty much everything that is a part of your digital life.

But when you're out on the town, it's time to pull your iPod Touch out and access the Bento app. It not only can integrate over the airwaves with Bento at home, but work as a stand-alone to keep you honest and your memory from having to be put to the test.

Lots of custom templates to get you up and running fast. Custom interface to keep you moving at that high speed. Even an iTunes-like Search mode so thinking doesn't have to enter into the speed of getting what you want.

And yes - it's got built-in security working so others don't "share" what you're doing.

Plays Well with Others

Bento

Best part of the Bento app to me is that it quickly integrates with other apps already worked out on the iPod Touch. Need to add a name? Don't type it in, just hit your Contacts and finger flick it. Or use Mail. Or Safari or Google Maps.

Databases aren't about having fun, but toss in plenty of graphics and even help screens to avoid aggravation. What you get is a companion to keep the mess and maelstrom of the digital world under control. Under your control.
