The Xerox 6130 is a very affordable entry level color laser printer from Xerox. It is compact, delivers very good performance quality. The minor gripes such as low paper holding capacity should not stop you from buying this printer, considering its price and performance.

The 6130 (office xerox.com) is the new entry level color laser printer offering from Xerox. It is a very affordable small office or workgroup printing solution from Xerox that promises quite a lot! Let’s take a deeper look at what this budget offering is all about.

Looks

The 6130 is a little bigger than the monochrome printers or the inkjet ones available out there, but when compared with other color laser printers in the market, it is definitely smaller and a little more attractive. Its dimensions are about 16 x 16 x 16 inches and it weighs a relatively light 38 inches. It sports an attractive curvy front side instead of the usual straight angles we find in most printers.

The Good:

Connectivity:

When it comes to connectivity, this one has the works. The 6130 is equipped with a USB 2.0 port that can connect to a single PC and also features a built in 10/100 Ethernet adapter.

Saves energy usage:

This printer will also save on your energy bills, consuming only 280 watts of power when printing; no wonder it comes with an Energy Star sticker stuck on it!

The not so good:

One small gripe with this printer is that it isn’t too generous with the paper holding capacity. It has a bottom drawer that can hold a maximum of 250 sheets and a single sheet feeding slot, which is quite skimpy. For a color laser printer, the 6130 makes considerably less noise, though it is obviously noisier than monochrome printers and is best kept a few feet away from the desk that holds your PC and your phone. The outlet for the printouts is situated at the front rear of the 6130, which means that you will have to stand up and stretch over it to get to them, if you plan to keep it situated at desk height. Another minor irritant could be that this printer only prints page down and not page up as we would ideally want it to.

Decision making factor:

Now, for the all important decision making factor – performance; this one certainly doesn’t disappoint here. The 6130 churns out 16 pages per minute of monochrome prints and slows down to 12 pages per minute for color prints, which is quite acceptable. For black and white prints, the first page is out in 14 seconds, while that number increases by 3 seconds for the colored ones. The 600 x 600 dpi resolution ensures clear, sharp and clean prints. The expandable 128 MB of memory that it comes with and the toner cartridges that are a treat to install are also features worthy of mention.

The 6130 supports printing in 3 in x 5 in, Legal (8.5 in x 14 in), A4 (8.25 in x 11.7 in) as well as Letter A (8.5 in x 11 in) sizes. Also, along with plain, bond and glossy paper, it can print on business cards, envelopes and labels. The cost per print works out to 3 cents for a black only print and around 15.5 cents for color prints. As far as cartridges go, it holds one each of Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow toner cartridges, each of which can print up to 500 pages; replacements for these cartridges retail at around $75- $80.

Photo print outs have good color reproduction but are a bit grainy. The 6130 has a maximum monthly cycle of 40,000 pages per month. On top of all this, the 6130 retails for around $375, which considering all the features it boasts of and the performance and quality prints it delivers, is a steal at its price!
