Error messages about USB drives not being formatted are a common problem. If you’re plugging your drive into your computer and getting this error, here is how to fix it.

Are you having problems accessing your data in your external USB Hard drive? Have you formatted your hard drive and copied your data to it, but now when you plug it into your computer, the following box pops up?

This kind of error is very common in Windows, and most people who get this error do not know how to fix it. When the above error message pops up, people often think they can’t access their drives anymore and then they quickly want to reformat their drives, not knowing that with patience and some effort, they can access their data again.

The USB hard drive not formatted error is very annoying, especially when you want to access important data from your drive and do not have it in a back up drive elsewhere. Fortunately, there are ways to fix the problem. Before we look at the solutions to the problem, let’s talk about why this error message pops up. Here’s the explanation: the disk you’re trying to access either has not been prepared for use by your Windows operating system, its file system has been corrupted by malware or because of a improper system shutdown, or it has been physically damaged from inside. A hard disk can be physically damaged due to various reasons, such as a water spill, extreme weather conditions, bumps, knocks, etc.

The drive not formatted error can also pop up when the drive is not properly connected to the computer, or the USB connector or the USB port on your computer has become faulty.

How to Fix the Drive Not Formatted Error

One way to fix the USB hard drive not formatted error is to connect your drive to another USB port on your computer. Try this and see if changing the port works. If after changing the port the problem still remains, try connecting your drive to another machine. A friend of mine who was facing the same problem connected his external hard drive to a UNIX running machine, and he was easily able to access his data. It seems that perhaps UNIX is a little more tolerant to broken USB drives!

If you are not successful with any of the above methods, then the last thing you can do is click the Yes button on the error message dialog box to format the partition. However, after formatting, all the data on the drive will be lost. In this case, a reliable data recovery program will help you out. There are many data recovery software options available on the internet, like Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery, ParetoLogic Data Recovery Pro , Disk Doctors.

Go ahead and try any of these data recovery programs. Hopefully you will be able to recover your data in a few minutes.

However, if you are worried that you are not a computer expert and might not be able to do the data recovery well, then you should give your drive to a data recovery expert. The data recovery companies are used to such things and they know how to handle these problems in a proper and more efficient manner. If you have very important data on your drive, I would recommend that you do not do anything yourself; just approach the data recovery experts and get them to do it for you.
