Linksys routers make it easy for you to set up a wired or wireless network at home or in an office setting. Read on to learn how to access Linksys router settings.

Use Your Browser

In order find out how to access Linksys router settings, you will first need to connect the router to your computer or network. Follow the instructions included with your Linksys router in order to make sure it is properly connected. You can find some steps that will help you through this process in the Bright Hub tutorial, How to Set Up a Wireless Network in Your Home.

Once you have the Linksys router connected to your computer, open up your favorite web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. In the address bar, type 192.168.1.1, which is the router's IP address, and press Enter.

Linksys Router IP Address

User Name and Password

A dialog box will open asking you for your user name and password. If this is the first time the router settings have been accessed, try leaving the fields blank and clicking OK to access the Linksys router settings page. If doing so does not give you access, check the manual that accompanied your Linksys router for the initial user name and password. Typically, the user name will be admin and the password will simply be password. After entering the user name and password, click OK to be taken to the Linskys router settings page.

Linksys Router User Name and Password

Set Up Passwords

Now that you know how to access Linksys router settings, the first thing you should do is change the router's password. This will prevent unauthorized users from accessing the router settings. To do so, go to the Administration tab at the top of the router settings page, and then click Router Password in the left pane of the router settings page.

If you are using a wireless Linksys router, you are also recommended to create a security key to keep neighbors and hackers from accessing the Internet using your Linksys router and network connections. To do so, click the Wireless tab at the top of the router settings page, and then click Wireless Security in the left pane of the page. In the Personal Key field, enter a password or key that you will be able to remember. It should also be one that outsiders will not easily decipher. To learn more about securing your wireless network, read WEP, WPA, and WPS - Which to Use?

You can access other router settings from the Linksys router settings page by clicking the appropriate tabs at the top of the page. Refer to your Linksys manual for more advanced setup instructions.

RE: Configuring a Linksys Router Settings
One of the down sides of setting up a wireless router with WEP personalized password is, there's software able to decode your password. I rather use MAC address recognition, since it is absolutely impossible for a wireless hacker to know your MAC Address unless you let him/her physically poke on your computer and bring up some DOS windows to invoke an IPconfig.exe status. And since I'm not giving access to anyone else but the home devices, It's totally automatic, and I don't have to have the code written or else to hand down to anyone. Everyone at home just turn their gear on and surf away. Passwords are for business joints providing connection to the patronage.

Verizon vs Linksys router
The Linksys router and Verizon modem or modem\router come with the same gateway 192.168.1.1 Change the Linksys router to something else like 192.168.2.1 After that you can login to the Linksys Router to change settings. (To change it, disconnect the ethernet between the modem and router. Log in. Or reset the router and set it up again.) Also, try plugging an ethernet from the problem device to Verizon modem (bypass router) to see if you have the same problem so you can rule out the Verizon modem or the router.

PS3
What problems with the PS3 ? Your router configuration should not have any effect on the PS3 communication with the internet unless you went in and made some outgoing firewall rules in there or blocked some internal ports.

ports
how can i tell if all the ports are open? having trouble with the PS3 and that is what they said that have to open

What you are saying it's quite strange.
When you open a command prompt and type: ipconfig /all

What is the IP address displayed at the Gateway ? (that is your router IP address).

You could try to trick the web browser by giving a name to your router.
Go to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc" and find the "hosts" file. Right click on it and say "Open" and choose Notepad as editor.
Look at the IP address of the gateway, the one you obtained by the command I suggested previous. Lets presume that IP it is indeed 192.168.1.1
Then go to the last line and add a line like this :
192.168.1.1 myrouter

Then save the file.
See this article for more details : http://www.brighthub.com/computing/smb-security/articles/56992.aspx

After you edited your hosts file, close all the browser windows. Open a new one and type in the browser: http://myrouter

This should open the default webpage of your router.

You can try with this users : admin, root, administrator
And this passwords : password, "blank password", admin

Try all this combinations. It should work unless you have changed the default password.

Can't access setting page
I followed the directions as written and typed in admin and password, I have to do this three times and then it takes me to this pink page and this is what it says:

401 Unauthorized
Authorization required

Am I doing something wrong? I am trying to set a password so my neighbors wont use my internet.
John Jan 6, 2011 7:18 AM
still ain't accessing
@ george

yeah i followed what tricia and other have suggested, and i dont have any problem with signal or connection with my linksys router.... my problem thou is i want to access its configuration so that i could change some of my setting. When I type and execute 192.168.1.1 it is directing to my internet provider page and quoting numeric address is not allowed coz it is similar to auto response of some virus... could anyone post the exact address "after" you have executed 192.168.1.1, i know it would be like http:\\192.168.1.1\config.apx@$%^^$ whatsoever... i just need to try that if i could bypass my internet provider filtering.

Aggie
That means you are going out DIRECTLY trough the Virizon router / modem and not your Linksys.
How does Verizon deliver the internet connection? Do you have a modem/router from them or just an ethernet cable in the house ?
Your Linksys router should stand between your computer and the Verizon line.
So the Verizon connection should be plugged into your WAN port of the Linksys router and then your machine connected to the Linksys.
What is the SSID wireless name that you are connected to ?
Aggie Jan 5, 2011 2:08 PM
Can't get to linksys website
When I type in the IP address, I get my verizon network page and I can't get to the Linksys set up to change my wireless from unsecured to secured. Otherwise it works fine. Thanks.

John
Are you trying to access your router from your computer at home or from somewhere at work or something like that ?

Try to open a command prompt. Go to Start > Run and type "cmd" then hit Enter.
Then in the new window (will be a black one) try to type the following command followed by Enter : ipconfig
What it is the IP number of your Gateway ? (That is the IP address of your router and you should be able to access it from a web browser like Tricia explains)
John Jan 1, 2011 1:20 AM
block by Internet provider
192.168.1.1, router ip address, has been blocked by internet provider as they wont allow numeric address.. here is their comment...

sorry we cant process the request for the numeric web address you have entered since it look similar to automated request frm a compiter virus or spyware application. Please access the page by including the filename along the with the IP adress e.g. http//10.1.1.2/index.html

any idea??

Has the router ever worked? Sounds as though it may be bad.
Zack Nov 27, 2010 8:08 PM
Still not working
I reset my Router and its still doing the same thing i even tried three different browsers just to make sure that wasn't the problem and they all did the same thing i have no idea what the problem is maybe its just my pc in general?
Tricia Goss Nov 26, 2010 7:21 PM
Zack
After checking your physical connections, turn off your PC and unplug the router and modem's power cords. Wait a few minutes, plug them back in and turn on the computer. If it still isn't working, try resetting. Hope that helps!

How do I change the MTU-settings on a linksys router?

fyi
if u are trying to access ur router, and 198.168.1.1 is not working, the guaranteed way to get the number is by going to:

start > run
type IPCONFIG into the box that pops up
hit OK

a bunch of txt with numbers will display.. ur router number (ip) is listed as DEFAULT GATEWAY... type that number into ur browser and it should work. i had to do this because my router ip was not the usual 198.168.1.1 or .109 as seen here

if you don't remember the router username and password, you'll have to ask whoever set it, or reset the router by inserting a paper clip into the reset hole usually found on the back of ur router.

Upgrading router's driver
I have tried speaking with cisco, but they have aknowledged that the warranty is out of date.

This is just a theory anyhow, that my router has got problem, and doesnt seem to be possible to fix such problem.

Could there be any other options what possibly could have happened? i guess to buy new router would be cheaper than geting it fixed. Plus new routers are faster,
VK Jun 29, 2010 5:43 AM
Password
to access the router you must try connect to 192.168.1.1

if you get the login page, use these login details:
username: linksys
Password:admin

If it doesnt work, you should hold the reset buton of your router for 10 secs, it will reset your password to default.

There is another problem to which i dont have answer, is once you upgrade routers driver which should solve the lag problems, it might mess up your router.

still waitig for suggestions to that.

Ben
I got to the FTP dialog and tried the defaults, because I just got a new laptop, So i reset the router and now has no password set, So i tried the possible defaults suggested, I called tech support and they said that since the warrenty on the router is expired that they will charge me 30 bucks to try and help me. So Im trying to do it myself.

What do you do if you've lost the password and you have another computer in the house that wants to use the system? How do you retrieve the password?
